Thought experiment for SP:

Nathan Eovaldi.

Pros: no draft pick compensation, solidly above average starter, all star two years ago, takes the ball every five days, solid K/BB ratio

Cons: will be 35, might demand multiple years, still has doyer stink on him.

Projection: 2/50
I don’t expect the Giants to a BIG player in this year’s market. They all but admitted that when they said they wanted to lower the payroll.

But I still want them to at least try for the 3rd WC. Eovaldi, as our roster sits right now (sans Snelk) would be our #3 (Webb, Ray). But that is not an imposing front end. I fear that if they sign EovaldI, it would essentially be a punt on any semblance of competitiveness this year.

May be worth it as he has done pretty decently in Texas as a mid 30s starter but, as you mentioned, he will be 35. He is getting close to that point where players decline rapidly. Of course, it seems starters are holding up better in their mid to late 30s than position players this decade.

I really want Sasaki but I don’t know how the Giants get him. His signing bonus will be capped and he’ll have to sign a minor league deal due to amateur rules so all 30 teams technically have a shot. I’m sure he will prioritize where he’ll get the best chance, feel most comfortable and who will be most competitive. Not sure how the Giants can stand out.

Yeah, that was my concern. They've got a trophy, they've got Japanese players (very high profile ones at that) and they've got openings in the rotation. Why wouldn't he go there, unless he wanted a spot where he could be the only star from Japan.

Wade or Yaz? Who are you willing to let go in a trade more than the other? I prefer keeping Yaz right now at this point. Yaz has better War numbers but will be more expensive to keep, but I’ll still prefer keeping him.

As the roster sits right now, Wade is more vital. We don’t have another 1B right now, whereas we are quite deep in the OF.

True but I’m thinking the Giants might go for a more productive filler at 1st base, if they can. Putting in consideration we should expect Wade being on the DL part time in 2024. Whom you might ask? I don’t know, I’m leaving that to Posey this year.
