I agree, but we might have had a chance to be turned down earlier with Sasaki thinking we were interested from the get go. Now he knows we might be interested because the market is shrinking and he might be willing to turn us down as soon as we want to set up a meeting. Same result.
There is no market shrinkage for him. It doesn't matter what teams have signed a full rotation, any team can afford him so all the big teams are going to be in on him. As cal mentioned, the buy in is most likely location and competitiveness. Of course, we don't know what Sasaki wants in a team, so maybe he wants to be "the guy" from the get go. Or he may be like Yamamoto and wants to be on a team with other Japanese players. We don't know because he is very secretive on what he wants.

Maybe Boras significantly upped the amount needed when the Giants felt they were close to landing Burnes?
Maybe. But Im a bit tired of this "Boras as Satan" narrative.

Dude is just doing his job. And he does it extremely well.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened with the supposed deal that was in place and am grasping at straws.

To your point, I agree, he does his job well. But not everyone likes how he does his job well. If people don't like how much money players get, then maybe the blame should go more than just the biggest name player agent in the business. Maybe at least some of it should go to the owners and, maybe, even the fans.

As a typical fan I hate Boras and his approach. But as a player's representative he is by far the best there has ever been. His bargining technique is really rather simple. He uses the open market as his guage. He doesn't set his target salary on a players actual performance satistics but rather on the open market value. He will use 'what the market will bear' as his most likely landing spot.
As a fan I hate this approach but as a player it provides the optimal return (in money) and usually flexibility (opt outs) .

Very similar on how some people purchase a car ... go to multipule dealerships and get a quote. Then play the dealerships against each other for the best deal you can get ...

He too often does his job with bad faith tactics like he's doing to us with Burnes, or like he did having Snell miss spring training and therefore be useless for half a season. Fucked us there too.

Burnes to Dbags. :(

Only slight, slight, slight silver lining? At least it’s not the dodgers?

Sadly, I like this contract even more than the rumored ones to the Giants. This is either on Buster botching the negotiation, or ownership not wanting to spend. Either way it’s disappointing.

EDIt: seemingly, I obviously don’t know what actually went down.

Opt out after 2 years. I think the Giants are done with opt outs.
Interesting to see that he signed for about $30 million less than what Boras said was the target.

As filo mentioned, and as you last week, we don't know what goes on in the negotiations but was the opt out really the breaking point? I understand the frustration with it, and would have liked a team opt out between years 3 and 5, but that seems a bit odd to be the spot where the negotiations broke down.

Of course, I could also speculate that Boras never wanted Burnes to sign with the Giants. Maybe he had a grudge against the team after Correa and Chapman's extension. I really have no idea but its time to start wildly speculating.

As for remaining free agent pitchers, I may be okay with Jack Flaherty but he has more red flags to me than Burnes or Fried. If the cost is too high, I hope the Giants pass. I'd be okay with a 1 year deal with either Scherzer or Verlander. Past them, I hope the Giants just go with internal options at the back end of the rotation, because that would be where they'd be building with the rest of the free agent market.

CA taxes had a lot to do with the different prices for different teams, I suspect. The doggies can beat that disadvantage because they are a super team, but the Giants, A’s, Angels and Padres are stuck with that albatross.

Also, the Snakes are a decent young team with a better than even chance of going to the playoffs. The Giants are HOPING to MAYBE compete for the 3rd WC spot.

I don’t want anyone with a QO from that list. I like your targets of Flaherty, Scherzer and Verlander. I would PREFER the old guys because the expectations would be low, but it would be fun to see HOFers play, even at the tail end of their careers.

The way I see it, Pete Alfonso would upgrade 1st base but is it worth the cost, eventual move to full time DH and loss of more draft picks? I'm not convinced he is someone the Giants need to sign but I'd look forward to his ABs as a Giant if he is signed.
As for the rest of the infield, there is no need. We've got Fitzgerald at 2nd, Adames at short and Chapman at 3rd base. No need to bring in someone to muddy the waters.
Santander may be worth the signing but the outfield seems pretty set. Profar is too sketchy to count on reliably. Bader is not worth anything more than a 4th outfield type.
I've already addressed the starting pitching market.
As far as relief goes, our bullpen is decent. Not sure any of the arms on this list would be enough of difference makers to spend the money.

I don't think you understand the term "bad faith" because that doesn't apply here.
