Any Burnes updates? If we land him I feel like we look like a wild card team (assuming the usual required injury luck and so on)
Who needs Burnes:

The Giants have signed LHP Antonio Jimenez to a minor league contract. Jimenez spent his entire pro career in the Rays organization before becoming a free agent this offseason. He posted a 3.79 ERA, 58 strikeouts, and 22 walks in 61.2 innings split across 2 levels in 2024.

Great. We can add him to the collection of about 25 other pitchers vying to pitch in Sacramento in 2025 (not counting the A's AAAA team of the same location).

Seems we have thrown everything at Burnes and not shown any interest in other pitchers. Some of the pitchers are being signed as we wait for a possibility of signing Burnes.

Burnes doesn’t care to be close to his home. His home is where the most money gives him.

Just a few thoughts .... I have a relative that works in a law firm in NY. They also have handled some athletes contracts in the past. I ran the Burnes situation past him ... his remarks were interestimg ....
1. Tzill's comment about doing all that is possible for the client is spot on. That is thier job ..
2. He also thinks that the situation is not exactly as it appears. From his perspective most firms would not typically bring things like opt outs and side requests to the table this late in the process. If they have already worked out a solid framework for the contract they have invested a good amount of time and energy at this point. Most firms wouldn’t risk it at this point .....
Unless .....
3. Burnes and Boras are having second thoughts at this time (maybe another offer) and they need a way out that doesn't present a horrible optic. As it is now ... it would be a much better optic if the SF team left the negotiating table ... for any reason ...

Burnes, in my opinion, is clearly the best starting pitcher left on the free agent market. Below him, I would say the following are next best 5:
Jack Flaherty
Max Scherzer/Justin Verlander
Andrew Heaney
Nick Pivetta
Jose Quintana

People seems pretty high on Flaherty but I just don't see it. He has been awfully inconsistent in his career but is coming off a good 2024 season. Maybe he has finally realized the potential he flashed earlier in his career but at this point in time, I see him as a bit overrated. Still, he'd probably be a fine fit in the Giants' rotation.
The rest, however, are more back of rotation types. I put Scherzer and Verlander as a tie due mainly to the fact that they are both aging future HOFers who are still decent but have problems staying healthy. I'd be okay if one of them were signed to a one year deal (think of Randy Johnson with the Giants) but I'd rather see the Giants pass on Heaney, Pivetta and Quintana (or Kyle Gibson, Spencer Turnbull and anyone else below them). The Giants have plenty of arms that should probably get a chance over them.

And there is still the big prize Japanese pitcher, Sasaki

Saggy Pants just signed with the Sox. Boras leverage is waning.
Doesn't mean that he won't use the Red Sox until (and maybe even in spite of) they come out and say that they are done building their rotation.

Who is Saggy Pants. Beuhler?
I thought at first he was referring to Melancon (Poppy Pants) but knew that he couldn't have been talking about a retired reliever. Then I thought about Pomerantz (Poo Drama Pants) and knew he was already signed. I assumed it was Buehler and not Sandoval.

I do wonder, why are tzill's pitcher nicknames involving pants?

While I’d love to have Sasaki sign with the Giants, I have very little faith that he will.
The only negating power anyone has in this recruitment is location and competitiveness. He is limited in how much he can sign for, so $$ is a complete non factor. If the dogs want him, it is pretty much a done deal.

I agree, but we might have had a chance to be turned down earlier with Sasaki thinking we were interested from the get go. Now he knows we might be interested because the market is shrinking and he might be willing to turn us down as soon as we want to set up a meeting. Same result.
