I’m trying to be realistic about what they could get though. No way Boras/Burnes agrees to a non guaranteed contract after just 3 years.
I do understand that but if the report is true and Boras threw a major curve toward the end of negotiations, the Giants need to start at 3 years, with the goal of getting it at 5 years. Maybe they could even land it at 4 years.

No idea what it’s like to negotiate with that prick but I feel like the deal will be scuttled. Fuck Boras.

I say at 3 years. If he doesn't exercise his player option after his 2nd year with the team, that means he is not doing well at all. The team option gives him one year to make good or get removed.
yeah, but neither of those are realistic options. He has leverage and won't agree to that. The question is: will the Giants let him become a FA in two years or not?

I do agree he’s just doing his job. But this take confuses me as well. People can be just doing their jobs and still be assholes.

:heh:
Sure, but I've never read a GM say something like "he's an asshole." Maybe that's self serving since you don't want to piss him off for next time but I've never read anyone in the industry say anything but "he's a tough negotiator"

He negotiates in bad faith like he’s doing with us now. He fucks over teams and clients like he did last year when Snell lost half a season because he didn’t have spring training. He goes beyond just maxing his client’s deals.
that's pure speculation and you know it. We have no idea what the actual state of negotiations are. It's all rumor and when the dust settles we STILL won't know.

From Brisbee today on Luis Robert:

The elevator pitch for the Giants, though, is obvious. Robert has All-Star potential, and that’s selling him short. He offers dingers, speed and defense, which isn’t a combination that’s readily available. If there were ever a player for a team like the Giants to take a chance on, it’s Robert, especially with his low-risk, high-reward contract. Yes, he’d likely whiff and whiff and whiff and put up a .280 OBP for the Giants, driving you mad along the way, but he’d still give them another power threat. He’d also give them a player with a chance, albeit a slight one, at being a superstar.

Changing your mind on him or have you heard the White Sox are willing to lower their price?

I know exactly what happened with Snell. And clearly he’s being a bad faith negotiator again. Why you are carrying water for him I have no idea.

This.

I assume they would be asking for Eldridge. And that is a non-starter.
If they can get him for less I say do it. I agree not worth giving up on him yet (although I keep remembering how untouchable Luciano and Matos used to be)

If you look at Matos and Luciano, their stars began to dim as they moved through the upper minors. That hasn't been the case, yet, for Eldridge.

Just saying it happens often, especially with our prospects. As I said for now I wouldn't deal Eldridge for Robert...but there's plenty of evidence that in 2 years I'll regret that stance.

It isn’t like Robert is a can’t miss stud who will be with the team for years and years. Of his 5 MLB seasons, 3 have been average or worse. And he will be paid like an all star for the next 3 seasons. Him busting out is absolutely a possibility. I am not willing to trade our ONLY blue chip prospect for a huge question mark. We need to ADD to Eldridge. Not flip him.

I agree with this. Just reminding myself that we used to feel the same way about Luciano that we do about Eldridge.

I don't recall a fixed opinion on him, but the OBP gives me great pause. OTOH, if they did acquire him, they could move Lee to RF (where his arm would be better used). By all accounts, he's an elite defender and you can't have too many of those.

I posted an article earlier this offseason about the White Sox not lowering their asking price for Robert and your response was basically screw them. Just didn't know if you changed your last stated opinion on whether the asking price was worth acquiring him or not.

And if Lee was moved to right field, the Giants would need Robert to hit closer to 20223 than 2024. Lee's bat is better as a center fielder than a corner outfielder.

I have no dog in the fight. Just saying, there’s probably a decent chance he’s an asshole lol, even if he is just doing his job. I’ve heard teams say they flat out won’t go for Boras clients. That hardly reeks of someone who is willing to bend and negotiate. Now his clients may not want him to do that either…but if I had a gun to my head and someone asked me if I think he’s a decent dude just doing his job…or an asshole just doing his job…even with zero proof one way or the other, I know which way I’d bet. Lol

We know he is an asshole…

He is a lawyer.

Robert is injury prone and from the little I’ve read…seems to be trending towards bat only. Hard pass unless it’s bargain bin. These are the types of players that FZ signed and it didn’t work. If we get top prospects, I want athletic players or great defense players with power. This is my humble opinion.

Primary reason I didn’t like the early scouting reports on Tibbs.
