I wonder if a package of Camilo Doval, Taylor Rogers and some money would have gotten the Giants Nestor Cortes. Probably not as Devin Williams is next level.
I would prefer to keep Doval and Rogers in that deal. One upper level late inning reliever and another currently stumbling, potentially ELITE closer is more valuable than an inconsistent 29 yo #4 starter.

I wonder if Doval and a C grade prospect could have done the same thing. But maybe Cortes isn't that helpful to get, especially if we do land Burnes.

Taylor Rogers seems to be on the outs with Melvin. He was rarely used in high leverage situations last year, despite pitching well when used. Not sure what got him out of favor but there were rumors of him being possibly traded or nontendered earlier in the offseason.

I heard the rumors about Tyler being on the block. I don’t remember issues with Taylor. And I got the sense that Tyler was only “on the block” because of his salary (my read on it).

I don't remember where I read about Taylor. I did see Tyler's name floated, just before the tender deadline, and was surprised. I thought the Giants finally got their heads straight on his value. But they do seem to have a thing against Tyler's.
It will be interesting to see what happens next offseason with Tyler Rogers. I get the sense (nothing I've read, other than the possible nontender) that he will be allowed to walk. I hope he stays a Giant for life but we'll see.

Smith is a prospect.
Paredes is a starting, young 3B
Wesneski is a Hjelli type pitcher.
When comparing Paredes with Wade, I didn't think about the position difference. However, the Astros have a need at both corner spots, so maybe Wade would have fit the bill still. Now they have a need in the outfield as well. Wonder if they are going with a soft reset.

Bully arms almost NEVER spend their whole careers in one spot. Even more rare than hitters and starters (unless, of course, you consider a career of 2 years as their “whole career”)

Paredes is still young (25), so I doubt Wade (30) would have as much value to them.

that means 20 spots are “locked” with openings for 3 pitchers, 2 OFers and 1 infielder.

Rodriguez, Encarnacion and VR are all out of options. The org doesn’t appear to like VR (old regime?), so he is a trade/DFA candidate.

I think Jerar takes one of the OF spots (short leash) with Matos taking the last spot (McCray still needs work on his bat). Because Wisely still has an option, I think VR goes in as the fave for the last infield spot, but I don’t see him having a strong grip on that position.

For pitching, if we don’t sign another starter, I would guess Beck has the inside track for the last rotation spot. Birdy was great, but he is super young and still needs some ripening. The last 2 bully spots are always tough. Rodriguez is out of options, so I figure he is about as locked in as possible without actually being locked in. The last spot just goes to the hot hand. Almost impossible to predict at this point.

I would think that Rodriguez and Bivens have the inside track on the last two bullpen spots Both looked promising in 2024. Warren would likely be in on one of those spots as well.
I'm not so sure Beck would be the leading candidate for the 5th spot. He was mainly used as a long reliever both before and after his injury. Winn may be the inside man but he didn't look so good before his injury. Roupp probably would get a good look as well. I expect Birdsong to start at AAA, unless no one else is signed and he has a monster spring. Black, Ragsdale and Seymour would be dark horse candidates.
Schmitt may get the last spot on the infield bench over Villar. He has more versatility and is younger. But they may give Villar one more chance (ala Bart).
I'd agree on the outfield assessment, although Matos still has some work to do and I'm not sure the Giants will want to have him as the 4th/5th outfielder. They may sign someone for that role.

I envision all OFers getting decent play. I think there is PT enough for 5 spots.

Baseball Savant has created a new metric to capture the value of baserunning in terms of both stolen bases and extra bases taken. If you can believe it, the Giants ranked 11th in 2024 with +3 Baserunning runs added.

My gut says that isn’t possible, but I have only watched 1 team closely enough to have an opinion. It is entirely possible that baserunning across the league sucks ass.

The fuck does Burnes need honey in his contract for? He can buy all he wants.
I suspect he wanted a clause that allowed him to sit out pregame workouts if it were sunny out.

Makes a lot more sense than honey, at least…
