Catcher Max Stassi has agreed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants, per sources. Stassi underwent hip surgery in June. Injuries and a personal matter limited him to just five rehab games the last two seasons. Posted a 2.9 fWAR in 87 games in 2021.

It’s a no-risk deal and Max Stassi is local to Northern California. Playing in Sacramento would him to be close to his hometown of Yuba City.
Its a good signing by the Giants. They need some depth at AAA (currently just Porter and Sabol and I expect Sabol to transition from catcher, if he is even still around, in 2025). Stassi's past couple of years have been difficult. It would be nice to see him stay healthy and either fill in the backup spot with SF or get another shot at a big league spot elsewhere. I don't know how likely it is that Tom Murphy will be healthy in 2025 (or will even start the year healthy).

Nothing official yet, but a LOT of chatter that Kim and the Giants are close to a deal.

The Giants have a few catching options in the upper minors following the Max Stassi signing that it likely precludes the Giants from bringing back Curt Casali. Not a huge loss, but pitchers did like throwing to him even if the defensive metrics were unfavorable.

As much as I hate the Doggies I have to admit that they probably have the best model of how a team should be built and maintained. For the past decade they have had a 'core' team that consistently wins 93+ games a year. They spend their off season upgrading key pieces. For us ... we've only had 1 season above 81 wins in the past 8 years and that was a fluke year. Snelk would have been a nice piece to have but in the long run be only gives us 30 games a year. If we are going to spend that much money I would rather spend it on a 150 game piece of the puzzle that we can use for the next 5 years. Just as a comparasion ... IMHO ... for that money I would want Soto over Snelk ...

I do not want them going after Burnes or any of the other QO guys. This team is not close, and punting on picks is not the way to get closer. We just punted on a 2 or a 3 (whatever) for 1/2 a year of Snell in a lost season.

I cannot remember who was signed first, but my understanding is that the first QO guy (Chapman or Snell) the team signed was the loss of the 3rd round pick. The second signing meant losing the 2nd round pick. If I'm remembering correctly.

But yes, at that this point, it seems dumb to sign a QO, unless the FO really does have a plan to be in contention within the window of the signing being on the team. One season of Snell in a lost season was a dumb way to not work every angle to build the farm.

I would fine punting a 2/3 for a long contract with Soto.

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, no more of these 1-year monstrosity deals while punting on our future.

Good riddance, Farhan. 7 years too late, though.

By no means am I an FZ apologist but I do wonder how much his hands were tied on building the farm system. If the mandate from ownership is no tear down and don't trade players to make it appear that the team is giving up on the season and they don't invest in scouting and/or the farm system, could it be that it wasn't FZ's fault after all and that Posey's leadership won't make a difference on how this team looks the next 3 to 4 years?
This is purely speculation, of course. My hope (sorry Farhan) that it is mainly on FZ and that Posey will do a better job. However, I have to brace myself for the possibility that ownership expects wonders from a limited set of ways to build the team and that we may not see much improvement either with the product on the field or with the quality in the farm.
