Snell was never a 4th starter. He has had 2 elite years and 6 where he was a #3+. Even if we get decent Snell, we are a better team. If he's figured something out...oh, man. That rotation: Webb/Snell/Ray/Cobb/Harry??
This signing really puts the pressure on Hicks. I just dont see room for him in a healthy rotation. Between Cobb and Ray, though, there may always be at least one open slot for him.

Pitching depth matters, it's extremely rare for all 5 rotation guys to all stay available all year

I would call his 2016, 2017, 2019 or 2021 seasons #3+. Maybe #4+ (i.e. 4th starter on good teams, 3rd starters on mediocre/bad teams). He was #2+ in 2020 and 2022 and dominant #1+ in 2018 and 2023.

Per MLBTR:
"The Boras Corporation client will reportedly receive a $15MM salary in 2024 and has a $17MM signing bonus that will not be paid until January 2026. Snell will receive the bonus even if he opts out, so that decision essentially amounts to a $30MM player option for the ’25 season."

I think we had ONE year where a sixth starter (Sedowski if IIRC) had only 2 starts. That was an awesome year. Good Sanchy, Timmah, Bum, Cainer, Vogeltron.

Fun times

From Brisbee today:

The team is, however, substantially better. On paper. You know that every time you say that a team is “better on paper,” thunder crashes, lights flicker and wind blows the kitchen curtains around, but you can’t help yourself. This really does look like a better team.

Another thought: for all the grief FZ gets (some of it deserved), he absolutely phuking KILLED the market this offseason. He outgunned Boras....TWICE. His timing was impeccable and he deserves a ton of credit for that, no matter how the season plays out.

More Brisbee:

They had, by almost unanimous accounts, the second-best offseason in baseball. Look at all the teams below them. DON’T LOOK AT THE TEAM IN FRONT OF THEM, just look at the 28 teams that wish they had an offseason this exciting. It’s an excellent way to get excited about the upcoming season.

A list of Giants pitchers who issued 5+ BB/9 in a full season (what Snell did last year):

1. Foppert
2. Blue
3. Ortiz
4. Falcone
5. D'Aquisto
6. Ortiz
7. Estes
8. Zito
9. Lowry
10. Estes

I'd forgotten how uncomfortable Ortiz and Estes starts were.

In ‘11 we had 16 starts from the #6 and lower.

In ‘12 we only had 2 “other” starts (Hacker and Petit)

I think FZ has earned my MLB app monthly subscription to start the year at this point. There are actually multiple reasons to watch this team now.

It makes me much more comfortable with the Chapman and Snell signings that they are short term. I don't think either would have aged well.

I REALLY like the Snell deal. It is expensive, but it is SHORT. No jamming up the roster as the slew of kids on their way start kicking in doors. Black, Roupp, Whisenhunt, etc are not far off.

I agree that the deal is a lot less prohibitive on the team. I think Snell and Chapman COULD be overrated but I hope that both play well this year.

i agree, I am not a big fan, but he did a great job this off-season. Only thing I may change is keep JD and not sign Chapman (as I think only Chaps glove is noticeably better and then throw in the comp pick), but still, he got Chapman and Snell for the price of one of them (asking prices at beginning of FA anyway) and on small tenure contracts

I have to applaud FZ on rhe FA season. I didn't think he could or would pull something like this off. He has made the 2024 season special for us. There is some real hope that we will be force to be watched. When Cobb and Ray return to the rotation we could actually be Tzill's Rotation Of Doom ... going to be fun ........
