Got it ... thanks. Some very creative financing i have to admit. But it willl all go back to one of your originsl posts. Money will no longer be the prime consideration. They will get what they want from multiple team offers ... it will all come down to the .... extras ... what can the teams offer outside of the money ... and that is where we will really struggle ...
And that makes it all the more important to build a strong team through a strong farm system.

Well, at least it is not the Dodgers. I would love to know what made him want to sign with the Cubs and not even consider the Giants among the finalists.

No word yet on the terms. I strongly suspect he was GROSSLY over paid. So much so that ultimately, we will be happy we lost out on him.

It isn’t a floating percentage. It is a fixed return. The doggies owe him the specified amounts. That is non-negotiable.

Bonilla essentially bought an 8% annuity. He gave the Mets the remainder of the money they owed him and in return, he got a 1M annuity beginning 15 years later and paying out for 20 years (or whatever the specifics were). I did the math years ago and found it was a simple 8% compounded annually investment. That is a good investment, but it doesn’t deserve the mind blowing coverage it gets every year.

Remember that a couple days after the Ohtani deal was announced, it turned out it only hit the doggies for a total of about 375M in cap hit, not the full 700M. That is because the 700M includes a LOT of interest paid on those deferments and don’t count as salary.
Sounds illegal

Apparently, 2/30. With multiple options going in both directions. The contract is being described as “very complicated”.

Very odd.

I don't know all the details, obviously. I'm seeing about what you described. But I'd love to know, based on what little information is curently available, why the Giants couldn't even make the final 5 teams. This does not seem like an overpay at all on the part of the Cubs. Did the Giants just not want to bother with all the weird options?

It strikes me as something in the medicals scared teams off of his arm. Total speculation on my part, but 2/30 is near throw away money. Maybe scouts were in disagreement?

Or maybe he made the decision to go with the teams he wanted, and the Giants didn’t make the cut for whatever reason.

That is obvious. But in a bubble, that is a relatively tiny contract. There has to be something going on that kept the contract so small.

That's because the amount is reflected in a 2 year bubble and has a million different options embedded in it. A 15M AA is more than expected but the term is far below the expectation. The real question (for me) is ..... who is the contract tailored for .... the Cubs or Imanaga?

Was the 2 year time frame for the team or the player? One side is hedging their bets, Since the MAA is higher than expected but the term is shorter .... I'd have to think that the Cubs are the 'hedger'. Throwing a higher annual MAA made it more agreeable for Imanaga. If he has a stellar two years .... he will renegotiate the next contract for a much longer time frame and a higher rate. If he tanks, the Cubs only get hurt for two years ........... just my guess at the moment ....

While possible, it seems to be out of nowhere. He seems to have stayed generally healthy while in Japan and there were no rumblings about possible arm troubles. We may not find out but it would be interesting to learn what drove this weird deal and why the Giants were no where near it.

Giants didn’t want to announce another failed physical.

Another option .... .not very reasonable ... but possible ... they may be close to signing either Montgomery or (please no) Snell and since trading for Ray they may have felt they didn't no longer needed him ... and they deopped out
