The more I think about it, the more I'd be okay with the Giants signing Shota Imanaga. He seems rather durable and has generally been pretty good in Japan. He would probably slot in as a number 2-3 pitcher in the MLB and he'll cost a lot less than Yamamoto, due to his age. A 5 year deal would have him through his age 34 year season. I'd be okay with it. FZ, get it done.

I have no complaints about that

But if we miss out on him it would be strike three.
Not quite. The Giants were hugely vocal about Arson, Shohei, Yamamoto and to a lessor extent, Harper (and Correa, kinda). While we are linked to Imanaga, the team has not made any idiotic promises or set unreasonable expectations regarding him. Losing out on him would not be the same kind of marketing disaster the others have been.

The rumor mill on him has been really quiet, which is weird considering he posted the same day as Yamamoto yet Yamamoto signed over a week ago. I believe Imanaga needs to sign by Jan. 4th or he is assured another year in Japan. He had some hype (not nearly the same level as Yamamoto, but hype nevertheless) going into this offseason so it is a bit wierd that things stayed absolutely quiet on him after Yamamoto was snatched up.

The Giants tend to get guys they aren’t strongly linked to. No one expected us to sign Cueto or Rodon, for example. Kinda makes you think that Judge, Yamamoto, Harper and Ohtani were just smoke screens. That doesn’t make sense to me because those pursuits, I think, hurt the team a lot in public image, but if you try to remove an assumed narrative and just look at what actually happened, that theory kinda tracks.

The thinking, if true, was probably "we need to look like we are trying for the exciting wins". The assumption that the negative press from not signing "pursued" players is not as bad as not "pursuing" at all. At least, that is my first thoughts to why they may do that kind of public perception manipulation.

While I do agree with the sentiment .... I'm not sure that the term "pursuing" is actually the same thing as going "all in" ... at least from a fan's perspective. For me personally .... "pursuing" is akin to "kicking the tires" while going "all In" is similar to "doing whatever it takes". In many of these cases .... we just can't do "whatever it takes" ...

I keep thinking back to when the Dubs signed Iggy. That was viewed, at least on KNBR by the BBall-heads, that the Warriors were coming out of the wilderness and might actually be doing something. The Warriors had never signed a “real” FA before, but they tried to be mentioned in as many big rumors as possible to try to shake the org’s rep as a bottom-tier team. Signing Iggy was a sign to the league that top-end FAs WANTED to play for the Dubs.

I am not 100% certain what the parallels are here, but that signing has always stuck in my head. And ever since, it seems the Giants have used that similar strategy. But the Giants, I don’t think, were never in the Dubs class as a floundering franchise. Their apparent use of the flailing Hail Mary, though, makes them LOOK like that kind of franchise.

So, if I am understanding it correctly, the Giants are acting like they are a bottom dwelling franchise, even though they are not, and are flailing in their attempts to NOT look like one, only to make themselves appear to be one.

Simple and obvious, I know. Sometimes the things that don’t need to be said should be pointed out for the slower kids in class to catch up.

Put it another way, they're just treading water, stuck in neutral - for what reason I do not know. Not going backward, not going forward. Hoping for another '21 but without a strategic plan to make it happen

One of the reasons I so disliked ‘21. Found money can be so destructive.

TBH I doubt the FO would have made the moves they needed to even if '21 was a .500 season.

'17 was the year to commit to a plan (my preference, rebuild from the inside), but they could have gone the FA and trade route. They did neither and apparently are comfortable with staying the non-course course. The management group got their buildings in the McCovey Cove lot, so they are happy. They'll continue to shave contracts and maybe make a non-meaningful splash here or there to keep relevant on talk radio, but at this juncture I've little expectations

I think ‘17 was a bit early. ‘16 was weird, but we still had much of the core in place. ‘18 would have been ideal. Trade Bum at the deadline with an extra year of control and that could have fetched a decent return. Instead, they held pat to their belief that they are a consistent powerhouse that can attract the talent, not sell it. But as you said, they do neither.

So the Front office is not really trying to sign any big free agents and it is just a smoke screen? So if Yamamoto said, “yes” we would have said, “just kidding”? Just yanking his chain is all we would have been doing. Very interesting

So…

If events played out completely differently than they actually did, the posted theory would not hold up…

Hmmm…

I guess you got me on that one.
