I don't wish ill on any man (or try not to), but I sorta kinda wish a whole bunch of IL time for Dodger players this season and beyond. The rich keep getting richer. I guess we have to figure out (like the Stros and the Rays) how to win another way.

Wonder how much of that $325 million is deferred?
Kinda feels like real life. Politicians, big tech and big pharma keep getting richer and everybody else just trying to buy a $17 box of cereal :heh:

We missed out on Ohtani. We missed out on Yamamoto. And both landed on the Dodgers. I know that we still need to play the 2024 season and could become a Wild Card contender. However, the remaining "big names" on the free agent market have some serious warts. This just seems like a good time to go all in on a rebuild. I know it won't happen. FZ will go full stupid and try to build a 2021 team again but I really think this is a great time to just reset. Don't trade for a shortstop. Don't sign a high priced starting pitcher. Don't trade for a starting pitcher. Play the youngsters, trade whatever vets you can at the deadline (unless something miraculous happens and we have the division lead or a really good chance at the division lead come July) and make something better for 2027.

I agree, try to trade for some young studs that will be future pillars or keep trying to take on bad contracts with prospects attached. Snell and Chapman are not difference makers for this team imo.

Farhan needs to be rid of after this season. Nobody wants to come here seemingly because they don’t like his platooning or he hasn’t given them a reason to sign with no difference makers in the farm system. Either way, can’t see a reason to keep him anymore. Hopefully he doesn’t try and add anymore heavy deck chairs to the titanic.

That is the problem, he'll likely do it. Chapman is not worth the cost but I wouldn't be surprised to see him sign with the Giants for way too much money. And I get the feeling that he is going to land some mediocre shortstop to block Luciano for a season or two. He said that the team would get a big name player on the free agent market and that is one area he's gotten a lot of flak. Him making that statement put him into a corner. Cornered people make stupid, impulsive decisions.

I hope you’re wrong but fear you will be right.

We don’t know that yet, can only assume. We never hear about the giants placing the best offer, only tied for first. So apparently money is an object until we hear otherwise.
Im not speculating, it was reported pretty clearly that Ohtani was recruiting him. As he should. Add guaranteed playoffs and yeah, other factors than FZ not spending enough.

Didnt they just sign him to a 2 year extension?

Yes, yes you are. I’ve hear zero word that the Giants offered the highest contract. Much less offered the highest contract by far. I’m ok with Yamamoto picking the Dogs, it makes sense. Just want to see the receipts.

I'm fairly certain it will be basically everyone offering in the 300-325 range.

I’m fairly certain you are right. That’s not the point I’m trying to illustrate. If someone is “not going to be outbid”, I want to see a 10 year $400 million contract with two opt outs. Not a 12 year $327m contract.

At this point, we are both speculating until the truth comes out. Just tired of the front office talking big and then doing status quo when it’s time to ante up.

Again, there was no realistic way for the Giants to go anywhere near high enough to offset the obvious advantages of the Dodgers. This seems really obvious to me.

I feel like one of us is being purposely obtuse at this point. Not sure which I prefer. Either way. Cheers

FZ: "Here's an offer for a billion dollars for the next 20 years."

Yamamoto: "I like your manager. Will he be free to make his own lineup decisions?"

FZ: "We're working on it."

Yamamoto: "Will you have a good defensive team?"

FZ: "We're working on it."

Yamamoto: "Will you have a good offensive team?"

FZ: "We're working on it."

Yamamoto: "Will you make the playoffs with a real chance at a World Series every year?"

FZ: "We're working on it."

Yamamoto: "Thanks, but no thanks."

Player development. Player development. Player development.

Players don't develop without playing. I was impressed at how many players made their Major League debut this season. Probably no all-stars there yet, perhaps Bailey. But there is enough to build around. The 10-12-14 core were mostly grown in house: Cain, Lincecum, Bum, Panda, the Beard. It's a slow process, and I would be on board with a commitment to this. And while there appear to be no all-stars in the making in the minors, there are some solid pitchers and some decent hitters coming through the ranks.

A commitment to chasing the 2021 season is a fantasy.

We can't buy a championship. We can't seem to outbid the Dogs or Yanks. Perhaps we shouldn't be in that game.

Player development. Player development. Player development.

You can’t hit a grand slam with no one on base.

FZ is putting the Giants together similar to how WB put together the DC movies. They saw the Marvel was printing money, so they wanted to jump to the same spot in story development that Marvel was at. Marvel was 16 movies in and took the time to develop each character with their own solo movies before they put everyone together. DC jumped right in with Justice League.

The Giants want to START with the big FA superstar signing without having the farm system in place popping out useful players year after year. Without signing the mid-level guys to fill the holes the farm isn’t able to specifically fill. He is building in reverse. Not that this is really FZ’s fault. This comes from above him. But he was brought in because he mirrors that mindset.
