One free agent hitter that the Giants are rumored to be connected with that I really hope doesn't get signed is Matt Chapman. His offense has been pretty mediocre the past three years. His OPS+ has been 100, 116 and 108 from 2021 to 2023. And while his glove has been considered elite, if you believe the dWAR posted on BBRef, it has been slipping. They reported his dWAR at 2.9 in 2018 and 3.3 in 2019. Since then, it has been 0.4, 1.3, 0.6 and 1.6. He is still good defensively but, coupled with his bat, I see a player possibly getting overpaid. I hope the Giants pass, unless it is a short term, lower value deal (pillow contract type). Even then, I'm not really excited about him being on the team.

FZ: "We have a couple of mediocre corner outfielders we picked up as free agents last offseason. How about rounding them out with a mediocre center fielder and shortstop?"

What you all think about Trevor Bauer? I know he is an ex-dodger, and he was kicked out of baseball for a while. But…

No matter the facts, in today’s society, he is still guilty. And regardless of the facts of that case, he still seems to be a special kind of asshole.

No way he would fit in SF.

TLDR:
1. Luis Robert Jr
2. Mike Trout
3. Corbin Burnes
4. Spencer Steer
5. Dylan Case
6. Christian Yelich
7. Pete Alonso
8. Nolan Gorman
HM. Juan Soto

I don't think they'll be trading for Burnes or Case, as the FA market makes much more sense for them to acquire SP. Any of the other six I'd be pretty happy with.
1. Robert -- It'd take a ton to get him, but if we could do it without giving up Harry I'd make the move.
2. Trout -- taking the salary on might be enough not to have to part with Harry or Lucy
4. Steer -- A very FZ type player. Plays five positions well and can hit. Likely have to give up Harry.
6. Yelich -- I like him a lot but not sure we need another corner OF.
7. Alonso -- Would push LWJ to LF, but he's a K machine. I don't see a good fit in SF.
8. Gorman -- intriguing, depending upon cost. We could center a deal around Lucy and shift Schmitt to SS.

Why would the White Sox trade Robert? They are going to slash spending so they would need to keep controllable pieces for as long as possible.

Trout I cannot see on the market. Besides, he's been rather injury prone lately.

I'm intrigued by Steer but not sure I like the cost it could be to get him.

The rumors are that every White Sox player is on the table. Maybe we take a bad contract as well?

Moncada?
Can't see Benintendi, already a logjam of mediocre corner OF.

Moncada and Robert for Harry?

Who says no?

Too early to send Harry off... still early days but he could be something special.

Full disclosure: I've no idea who Moncada and Robert are

They surely could get a haul in return but I don't understand why the White Sox would package him with a bad contract (does Moncada even count in that category?) to bring back a prospect. I would think, if they are going to shop Robert, he's going to be traded only for a crap ton in return.

Friday is the deadline for tendering contracts to Arb eligible players. Wade, Tyler Rogers, Yaz and Estrada are all no-brainers. Slater and JD are still likely to be offered contracts, but they are not guaranteed.

FWIW Bob Nightengale thinks it's between the the Giants and Yankees for Cody Bellinger:

"I think he’s more of a Yankee, I don’t rule out San Francisco. I’ll go Yankees or San Francisco with Bellinger. I just don’t see them [Chicago] bringing him back at $200 million-plus."

Hope hes in pinstripes.

Agree.

Emotionally, I want to gobble up all BIG FAs. But logically, it is best if we lose out on MOST of them. My prob with the recent history is that the Giants have been vocally loud in their pursuit of all the big names but losing on all of them. That gives the org a very bad image.

I fully expect the Giants to be the biggest offers to both Ohtani and Yamamoto. Will they come here? Who knows?

All you can do is throw the money at them.

These are the only two FAs worth the bag.

From the KNBR website today

The Giants added three young prospects to their 40-man roster, preventing them from being eligible for the Rule 5 Draft.

Right-handed pitchers Trevor McDonald and Erik Miller, as well as southpaw Kai-Wei Teng, are now on San Francisco’s 40-man roster, which now stands at 39. Miller and Teng have the most experience at Triple-A, meaning they’re the most likely to contribute to the big-league club in 2024.

Shortstop Aeverson Arteaga, outfielder Grant McCray and reliever R.J. Dabovich are among the Rule 5 eligible prospects not added to the roster, meaning another team could select them in the draft.

I am expecting us to win Yamamoto. And I hope we lose out on Ohtani.

My top free agents:

1. Yamamoto

2. Snell
3. Bellinger
4. Ohtani

No on Chapman

Yamamoto is the man, get him although he might want to play for a contender so we might have to sign a name player or trade for a player for him to see we will be in the playoffs right away.

Snell is 5 years older but if he had a good relationship with Melvin and the new coaches he
Might want to play for the Giants.

Bellinger Is tempting but his past history is concerning. We might have to get him in order to land Yamamoto but I’m hoping not.

I don’t see Ohtani as an option. I don’t think he would want to play for a team that was not contending this year. Again maybe if we signed some big names he might see we are serious but we would run out of money by that time.

Maybe a crazy trade of Yaz going to Boston and they will give us anything we want might happen :hmm:

These are just my views but I’m probably right.

With I know atm, I don’t want Belly. But if the Giants were to sign him, I would ASSUME they have dug into why he sucked in LA, and have decided that issue is behind him.

Bottom line, I would cheer if we got him, but right now, I hope we don’t.

If we were to get Yamamoto and Snell, then just dumpster dives for everything else, I would call that an EXTREMELY successful off-season.
