Melvin Adon the biggest possibility there. He's still just a raw thrower, but damn that fastball is good.
Adon is probably the highest ceiling pitcher we got in the system. Doubt they want to risk losing him.

Another darkhorse name to consider for the 40-man roster: Dillon McNamara. A breakthrough year for him in AA. Middle reliever type guy, mid 90s fastball. Sits at 94, gets up to 97. Also throws a cutter which has been his bread-and-butter pitch in AA. It has multi-plane break, can slow it down to act more as a slider (high 80s) or speed it up to flatten out (low 90s).

Potentially a good quad-A guy that can give you some good low stress innings, a la Pierce Johnson or Derek Law (who are both out of options and potential 40-man roster casualties).

I really don’t see them getting ‘shaw. I expect there to be lots of rumors that they are in the running, but in the end it will be between the Giants and “Team X”, and “Team X” will end up signing him.

And where will Sammy be? Traded? Bully? DFA?

I'm thinking we eat half his salary and dump him back to the AL

As much as I don’t see ‘shaw coming here, there is about 1000x more of a chance of that than Machado or Harper coming here.

By my count, once the 4 free agents are off the 40 man roster (Blanco, Holland, Hundley, Pence) and the 60 day dl guys are activated (Cueto, Fernandez, Posey, Samardzija, Sandoval), the 40 man roster will be at 41 players. One guy has to be dfa'd before they even look at adding any guys for protection from the Rule 5 draft and sign any free agents.

I'd think these are the most likely cuts:

1. Johnson
2. Kelly
3. Okert
4. Valdez
5. D'Arnaud
6. Tomlinson

Valdez isn't on the 40 man roster.
What about Osich? Why would they keep him over Okert? Raw stuff?
How about Law? I think he is on this list too.
Gomez and Herb have to be considered too. Neither got called up this month and both looked bad at AAA.
And I think that Kelly will be relatively safe if he continues to pitch well in September.

Kelly might preserve his option for next year, so he could be safe.

Okert is out of options next year, but I think Osich has one more year. He didn't use an option in 2016.

I agree that Johnson, d'Arnaud, Tomlinson, Law and Herb are all at serious risk. Johnson just hasn't been good, d'Arnaud has been good versus lefties, but he's not irreplaceable, the Giants traded for Tomlinson's replacement, Law could save himself but he need to get his walks under control, and finally Herb just has been awful but I could see him coming back on a MiLB deal.

I think Gomez gets another shot, but it is telling that they didn't call him up

I think Tomlinson is almost a guaranteed DFA. Law and Beede are pretty good chances as well. At least one of the O’s will likely be cut loose. Johnson is a dime-a-dozen reliever, so it wouldn’t hurt if he was lost.

All that said, I am not certain that Arb-eligible players are technically on the 40.

They are, unless they are not tendered a contract offer. Remember, even pre-arb guys can get non-tendered. The only players not able to be non-tendered are guys signed to multi-year contracts. Even though the organization has control over their rights, they still have to offer a contract to the players in order to maintain those rights.

No way they cut ties with Beede yet. It was a brutal season, yes, but they are NEVER that quick with the hook

Not sure about the NEVER part but they aren't usually that quick with a prospect of Beede's caliber. Just ask Kyle Crick, right?

I'm going by ESPNs 40 man, which has Valdez but does not have Osich, Law, Gomez, or Herb.

Yeah, ESPN isn't even trying to be accurate on their rosters. I've stopped relying on them a couple of years ago but this year has been the worst in terms of them keeping up on transactions.

I knew ESPN was bad, but my gawd they are incredibly off. Shark, Cueto, Posey and Sandoval are apparently not Giants anymore.

Use this site San Francisco Giants 2018
RosterResources is really good. I am not certain they are 100% accurate, but they are a really good source.

For the roster, I use this site...
