Yeah with the length of his expected contract, age and prior history I don't see scenario where his value gets better. Maybe if he signs a 2-year deal you can flip him later, but anything beyond that is risky. I'd rather find the next Marwin Gonzalez somewhere, or see what MacShaw's got.
I th8nk Hanson has the potential to be a Marwin Jr...

He was looking really good the first half of last season but then faded badly. If he cannot put together a good 2019, I think it will be time to move on from him. I hope he does well. We could use the offense.

Updated to account for the recent adds...

———————————————————

Of course there will be more changes, but as the roster sits now, here is what I think the 25 looks like...

Bumgarner
Samardzija
Rodriguez
Suarez
Stratton

Venditte (replacing Blach)
Smith
Watson
Holland (replacing Law)
Dyson
Melancon
Bergen
Moronta

Posey
Garcia

Belt
Panik
Crawford
Longoria
Sandoval
Hanson

Duggar
Williamson
Ferguson
Shaw

———————————————

Stratton and Suarez both have options, so if they don’t want to lose Law, maybe one of them starts in Sacto with Holland in the rotation.

I'd swap Stratton with Holland, and then Stratton with Black.

At this point I don't see much variance with the batters.

I thought you both had Posey missing the start of the season recovering from his offseason surgery.

I also have more moves being made.

The only guaranteed DLer is Cueto.

Apparently I missed this one...

Affeldt is no longer on the announcing team and has been replaced by Shawn Estes.

Can’t say I am disappointed. I like JA a LOT, but his personality just did not translate to the booth in a good way. Estes is dull, but he does sound more professional. Unfortunately, that is the same for Lopez, so having both of those guys on the bench doesn’t offer anything for when Kruk can’t go (they are primarily on the crew to cover for him).

From MLB Trade Rumors:
The Giants may use the “opener” strategy at times in 2019 but won’t be among the league’s most aggressive teams with it, writes Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. Madison Bumgarner, Derek Holland and Jeff Samardzija will all be treated as traditional starters, though Schulman notes that president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi has recently expressed a desire to manage the workloads of younger arms like Dereck Rodriguez and Andrew Suarez “for their future and for ours.” Schulman’s column explores multiple avenues to achieving that goal and features multiple quotes from Zaidi and skipper Bruce Bochy on the pitching staff that Giants fans will surely want to check out in full. Schulman also reiterates that it’s still possible the Giants could explore trades of either Will Smith or Tony Watson as they seek additional rotation and outfield options. Both lefty relievers can become free agents next offseason.

If anyone needs an opener, its Samardzija. I'd rather see D-Rod and Suarez start a game than him.

And if the Giants are shipping out one or both of our amazing left handed relievers for outfielders, the return better be good rookie outfielders. No mediocre veterans. That move will be disappointing.

Gray to the Reds. The gave up Shed Long, who looks like a Ryan Howard + type prospect and a competitive balance pick. There may be a third minor piece going along with the package.

If the Giants weren’t in full rebuild mode, I would have been happy with them parting with that type of package for Gray. As it is, I prefer to keep the prospects.

According to Zaidi, the team is not in full rebuild and he expects to be competitive in 2019.

Thanks for that. I needed a good laugh today.
Acording to MLB Trade Rumors, he said this on a Murph & Mac podcast:
We’re going to do what we can within the constraints we have to put a competitive ballclub out there” in 2019. Winning the division “is always going to be a goal,” even as Zaidi admits the Dodgers are still the team to beat at this point.

The full interview can be found here - Farhan Zaidi explains reasons for slow nature of Giants' offseason on 680. I haven't listened to it to understand the context yet. I do understand that he kind of has to say the competitive part, though.

It wasn’t a podcast. There is no such thing as a “Murph and Mac podcast”. It was an interview they did with him last Thursday or Friday (week and a half ago).

I know he said it. I just don’t believe he means it beyond paying lip service to the fans. And I get that, and am ok with it. The Giants are a business, after all.

Good to know. That's how they referred to it at Trade Rumors. The offseason does bear out a different story. I just didn't know how seriously to take those comments.

Markakis returns to Atlanta. My updated Top 10 list of remaining outfield free agents: Bryce Harper, AJ Pollock, Robbie Grossman, Marwin Gonzalez, Carlos Gonzalez, Curtis Granderson, Melky Cabrera, Adam Jones, Denard Span and Gerardo Parra.

A rumor circulating that the Giants are about to sign Drew Pomeranz. I'm okay with a minor league deal (see what he can do in spring training) but I hope its not of the major league guaranteed variety.

Edit: This could also indicate that Smith or Watson could be traded soon.

Good upside on him but not sure why guaranteed roster spot. If he pitches like he did in 2018, he's just wasting a spot that could be given to Stratton or Suarez.
