I hope so, but it's getting to be time for him to find some consistency for a full season.

"getting to be time" -- No, past due.

Seriously ... in the small sample we have of Ross and the tiny sample of Perez (considering Jamey's email this morning too) ...

... who do we think of the three has the least potential of stringing together five quality starts in a row?

Anyone who has ever owned a sail boat knows how important the keel is. Holland has too often been out there on the mound "without a keel".

Robbie Ross 2.0?

Excellent numbers throughout the minors ...

@RR 32IP: 1.062WHIP 8.7H/9 1.7HR/9 0.8BB/9 6.5SO/9 7.67SO/BB

very nice consistency at every level

If Ortiz and Kirkman can handle the lefty roles in the bullpen it would allow Ross to be stretched out as a starter, which is where I believe he is of most value to us. We need to have a little more sp depth to guard against injuries.

Ross went 3.0 today ... definitely stretching him out. And if Perez and Ross compete so effectively for #5 ... then Holland better wake up. Game on ... #4 may be up for grabs too.

I believe there will be a little fire under Ogando too.
Nolan (on GAC earlier)... didnt exactly sound impressed with Ogando and his lack of offspeed stuff.

Ogando has more to worry about than Holland, Ogando is more likely to be moved to the bullpen than Holland removed from a starting spot

Agree. I want Ogando to succeed but given what I've seen (stats wise) this spring, I'm not feeling too confident about him earning a starting spot. He may clean it up a bit and show us he still has that filthy stuff ready for 6 plus innings but he'll have to work harder than most everyone out there. In my opinion.

Stats in ST mean very little. Especially this early. He's still looking for the feel on his fastball, and tweaking his mechanics, and finding his change up.

Difference is Ortiz is only a bullpen guy, as opposed to Ross he's not a starter filling a bullpen role

True. Opportunity to put Ross in a RP role en route to an SP shot this spring worked perfect (backed up by Uehara for a large part of the season). TEX took the risk after Ross won the job in ST and he performed. Working Ross as an SP is the next logical step and Ortiz gives TEX management room to compete Ross and Perez for the #5 spot.

The experience with Ross in the BP ought to give TEX reason to trust Ortiz in the same solo LH RP role. Don't think Kirkman as potential long man creates the same backup though that Uehara provided. Perhaps Feliz return mid-season will be the best backup since Feliz (like Uehara) has superior numbers against LH hitters.

Am firmly in the Ortiz camp. Only 22-yo and has excelled at every level in purely a RP role.

Thats true. I just get overly anxious during ST...every year, never fails. Unfortunately I have no way of watching the ST games so stats are all I can go by. But I agree, too early to tell. I really hope he does find that change up. What a nasty pitch to have with that fastball.

Numbers show pretty good outing for Holland today ... tuning up for the classic?

4.0IP 3H 0R 0BB ... 14 batters faced (2 over minimum) ... 54 pitches/32 strikes (59%)

That's good to see.

Moreland with a home run for his second game in a row. Came off a lhp. Martin is also continuing to tear it up.

Kirkman ... 2.0IP 1H 0R 0BB 3K ... 27p/19k. Finishing up against minor league hitters ... still shows good command ... nice outing from what it looks like from the stats. Opened with 2 Ks and finished got his 7th batter with his third K. Gameday just shows sinkers and sliders.

And speaking of guys tearing it up ... what's the deal with Anducci? Getting a huge amount of PT ... and making very good use of it. Another L/L CF-qualified invitee ... four years younger than Murphy with double the output in fewer ABs. Even Borbon has better ST numbers than Murphy right now.
