nice might finally have a pass rush

Patriots selected Oklahoma DE Ronnie Perkins with the No.96 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

It was a compensatory pick the team received for losing Tom Brady to the Bucs last year. Perkins was a highly sought-after four-star prospect who was rated as the fifth best weak side DE and 57th overall recruit from the 2018 recruiting class. He wasted no time making an impact, starting seven of the last eight games of his first season on campus, recording 37 tackles and five sacks while receiving freshman All-American recognition from ESPN. The St. Louis native went on to have a storied three year career at Oklahoma, registering 95 tackles and 16.5 sacks while receiving back to back second-team All-Big 12 recognition in 2018 and 2019. He’s a little small to hold up as a full time defensive end in run support, but Perkins consistently seems to play with a physicality above his stature, stifling much larger tackles thanks to his bear-like hand strength.

Patriots traded up with the Bengals to select Alabama DT Christian Barmore with the No. 38 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Barmore (6'5//310) wasn’t widely recruited in his first three years of Neumann Goretti HS in Philadelphia, PA originally accepting an offer to Temple before raising his scouting profile to four-star status as a 2017 incoming freshman. A dominant presence in the middle of Alabama’s vaunted defense, he earned All-American recognition from several outlets en route to being named Defensive MVP of the 2021 CFP National Championship Game. His production numbers are prolific, as Barmore leads all Power Five defensive tackles with 65 QB pressures over the last two seasons and 39 pressures in 2020 alone. The barrel-chested tackle also boasted a 13.3% run stop rate and an absurd 19.5% pass-rush win rate according to PFF. Barmore’s 4.93 40-yard dash at his pro day workout was a stellar mark and his athleticism was confirmed by a solid 8.25 overall RAS. He can play anywhere between the tackles while being disruptive thanks to lightning-quick initial burst and aggressive hands. Has the ability to take over games, but also had stretches of pedestrian play early in 2020 before turning it on down the stretch. Barmore comps out favorably to New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Despite having an impressive defense on the whole, New England ranked 27th in sacks per game last year. The addition of Barmore, who will slot into a starting role from Week 1, should help round out the Patriots defense and push their pass-rush closer to the level of their coverage unit.

let the mac era begin

Patriots selected Alabama QB Mac Jones with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Patiently waiting behind Tua Tagovailoa, Jones (6’3/217) set college football’s QBR record in 2020 as a redshirt junior under coach Nick Saban and OC Steve Sarkisian. Jones completed 77% of his passes with a 11.2 yards per attempt average and a flawless 41/4 TD/INT ratio. Even when accounting for Alabama’s personnel, Jones’ season was exceptional. He led college football in passer rating on both non-play action and under pressure attempts. His intermediate accuracy and processing are at the top of the draft class, but Jones’ forgettable physical traits make his NFL projection tricky. Jones only had 14 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, and his movement skills inside the pocket are Philip Rivers-like minus two inches and 15 pounds. To compete with the dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks of the modern NFL, Jones has to be an outlier mentally or else risks being in the Jimmy Garoppolo tier. If his one season as starter suggested anything, it’s that Jones can execute a passing offense with perfect timing and understanding of defensive coverages. He’s as pro ready as possible for a non-top five consensus prospect. We’ll quickly learn if his raw tools are too much to overcome in today’s NFL. The Patriots re-signed Cam Newton this offseason, but Jones should now be the favorite to lead New England in starts this year.

In the 3rd Round the Patriots took Ronnie Perkins LB/Edge Okla. I love this pick. He smoked some weed and got caught.
They should ask that question during interviews.

Anyone who says no should be passed on as a liar. I'm not saying everyone has done it, just the list is so high that the risk of that person being a liar is too high to chance having them on your team.

Then again, they say lying is a sign of intelligence. Maybe only accept those who say no, not because they didn't do it, but because they were smart enough to lie about. We don't want to exclude too many so we could also include anyone who was caught doing it, because, well, to lie about a known fact goes back to being stupid.

I guess it might be easier to just not care.

In hindsight, why didn't anyone say Lawrence smoked weed so he could have fallen to us?

I partially disagree with your rating system. We picked up a stud tackle in the 6th round last year. The 5th, 6th and 7th round are also about gambling on longshots. It's also about finding projects that can later grade to 1st and 2nd round status. Stephen Neal was a long time starter though not drafted. Did BB draft Edelman to be a fringe backup (at QB no less)?

There are so many complaints about the Pats striking out in the draft through the years but rarely acknowledgement of their homeruns.... and let's be honest, guys like Neal and Malcom Butler were grand slams.

Patriots selected Oklahoma RB Rhamondre Stevenson with the No. 120 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Stevenson (5’11/231) is a late-blooming JUCO transfer (Cerritos Community College) who eventually landed as the power runner in coach Lincoln Riley’s high-octane attack. The 231-pounder compiled 1,180 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries (7.2 YPC) across 19 FBS games, adding 28 receptions as a capable check-down option and pass protector. For a player of his size, Stevenson has nice control over his feet in all phases. However, his raw speed (4.64 forty), age (23 years old), and maturity (poor grades, a failed drug test, and occasionally ballooned weight) cloud his otherwise intriguing profile. Stevenson projects as an Alexander Mattison or Jordan Howard-level committee back in an inside zone scheme, though the Patriots admittedly have two of those prototypes (Damien Harris, Sony Michel) on the roster already. Stevenson could replace Michel if the team chooses to move on from the latter.

New England Patriots 2021 NFL Draft Picks:

  • Round 1: No. 15 – Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
  • Round 2: No. 38 (from CIN) – Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama
  • Round 3: No. 96 – Ronnie Perkins, DE, Oklahoma
  • Round 4: No. 120 – Rhamondre Stevenson, RB, Oklahoma
  • Round 5: No. 177 – Cameron McGrone, LB, Michigan
  • Round 6: No. 188 – Joshua Bledsoe, S, Missouri
  • Round 6: No. 197 – William Sherman, OT, Colorado
  • Round 7: No. 242 – Tre Nixon, WR, UCF

Even split. Four offense, four defense.

First three all filled 'needs' or perceived needs. No personnel were traded and that means that the staff is happy with what they have to work with. Considering all things, I'd give this group a B+. Can't wait for camp.

I like this draft would, think multiple could see significant time on the field, in two years the talking heads will be amazed McGrone fell to us at 177, and how many teams missed on him.I like Nixon also, he has home run speed

I was surprised Shakur Brown wasn't drafted. He's short but otherwise a dynamic ball hawk. I'd sign him. Could possibly mold into a FS? Not corncerned about WR. If BB sees some potential in one of them go for it.

I like the size and press ability of Mills.

Otherwise this team is pretty well set. Do need to think about restocking at OL, CB and S for the future.

After MANY years of seeing the Pats get “A” or
“A-“ grades from the pundits, only to see those draft picks look mostly like crap, I am not sure what to say here. Belichick has proven that he isn’t all that good at drafting. But it DOES look like they got a solid QB prospect to work with and that was their greatest need. Hopefully they can develop him properly.

A quicker and younger version. Maybe the pick of the 2nd round? But after restocking in FA was this a position of need.
The pick of the 2nd round went to Cleveland. Their 1st LB selection should have gone in 1st round. Jeremiah Owusu Korumoha
Ours is certainly a good pick but a boom or bust pick.
Again we have a lot of information on this guy

Stevenson is our short yardage back. Burky, big and strong! Will run through the hole flattening the tackler with a straight-arm and gaining the 2 yards needed plus a couple. Touchdown! "would you like a 231 pounder to go with that drive?"

That hasn't been proven at all. What HAS been proven is BB can win championships. Credit TB all you like, but it was BB who won SB49 before MB made a break for that ball.
