Patriots selected Oklahoma DE Ronnie Perkins with the No.96 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
It was a compensatory pick the team received for losing Tom Brady to the Bucs last year. Perkins was a highly sought-after four-star prospect who was rated as the fifth best weak side DE and 57th overall recruit from the 2018 recruiting class. He wasted no time making an impact, starting seven of the last eight games of his first season on campus, recording 37 tackles and five sacks while receiving freshman All-American recognition from ESPN. The St. Louis native went on to have a storied three year career at Oklahoma, registering 95 tackles and 16.5 sacks while receiving back to back second-team All-Big 12 recognition in 2018 and 2019. He’s a little small to hold up as a full time defensive end in run support, but Perkins consistently seems to play with a physicality above his stature, stifling much larger tackles thanks to his bear-like hand strength.Patriots traded up with the Bengals to select Alabama DT Christian Barmore with the No. 38 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Barmore (6'5//310) wasn’t widely recruited in his first three years of Neumann Goretti HS in Philadelphia, PA originally accepting an offer to Temple before raising his scouting profile to four-star status as a 2017 incoming freshman. A dominant presence in the middle of Alabama’s vaunted defense, he earned All-American recognition from several outlets en route to being named Defensive MVP of the 2021 CFP National Championship Game. His production numbers are prolific, as Barmore leads all Power Five defensive tackles with 65 QB pressures over the last two seasons and 39 pressures in 2020 alone. The barrel-chested tackle also boasted a 13.3% run stop rate and an absurd 19.5% pass-rush win rate according to PFF. Barmore’s 4.93 40-yard dash at his pro day workout was a stellar mark and his athleticism was confirmed by a solid 8.25 overall RAS. He can play anywhere between the tackles while being disruptive thanks to lightning-quick initial burst and aggressive hands. Has the ability to take over games, but also had stretches of pedestrian play early in 2020 before turning it on down the stretch. Barmore comps out favorably to New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Despite having an impressive defense on the whole, New England ranked 27th in sacks per game last year. The addition of Barmore, who will slot into a starting role from Week 1, should help round out the Patriots defense and push their pass-rush closer to the level of their coverage unit.let the mac era begin
