Here's the breakdown of Pomeranz' deal, according to Trade Rumors:
The incentive pay is quite achievable, so long as the Giants keep Pomeranz on board and keep him in the rotation. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has the details (Twitter link).

Pomeranz gets $500K if he’s on the active roster coming out of camp and upon the season’s 150th day, in addition to a quarter million apiece for being on the roster 90 and 120 days into the 2019 campaign. He also receives $250K for reaching 25 and 50 innings, a provision which will be met early if he’s a starter and can still be triggered if he works from the pen.

The rest of the cash requires Pomeranz to open ballgames. He gets $125K apiece upon his second, fourth, sixth, and eighth start; $100K upon reaching 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 27, and 30; and a final $200K if he records a full 32-start campaign.

A rumor circulating that the Giants are about to sign Drew Pomeranz. I'm okay with a minor league deal (see what he can do in spring training) but I hope its not of the major league guaranteed variety.

Edit: This could also indicate that Smith or Watson could be traded soon.

I HOPE they target a few guys like that.

Not only will they most likely need them, they can be really valuable trade bait at the deadline.

Someone like Drew Pomeranz could be excellent. He was awful last year, but his numbers were way out of whack. His walks were way above normal, his homers were way above normal, his flyball rate was way above normal, his BABIP was way above normal, and his fastball was about 2 MPH slower. Is it possible he's just on a huge decline? Yeah, but maybe last year was an off-year injury wise and he can bounce back next year. Shouldn't cost a whole bunch either.

I'm okay with this (obviously). High upside, minimal downside. Stratton is who he is, I don't envision a major breakout from him. I still bet he makes double-digit starts anyway.

If Pomeranz is amazing, then maybe they look to extend him or flip him. Mid-season pitching always fetches more than mid-season hitting.

I thought you mentioned him before, but was too lazy to look it up. Thanks for tooting your own horn. It saved me a few minutes. :D
For the price, it is a very reasonable signing, and if he can re-gain his Oakland magic, a great signing (for the money, especially). I would be bothered with this signing if he looks bad in spring and other are outperforming him, yet they break camp with him. I'd be even more bothered if they hold on to him for a couple months, in hopes of him somehow suddenly looked good enough to flip, if there was a guy at AAA looking like he was ready for a trial run with SF.

Normally I would be in total agreement with you, but the cupboard is so bare in AAA/AA in terms of starting pitching that I don't mind it much at all. If he's THAT BAD, I don't anticipate they'll hang onto him, but even if he's moderate, there's just not much he's blocking. Shaun Anderson is about the only guy, but I'd like to see a bit more out of him first. Logan Webb too, but he's probably not going to push right out of the gate.

I guess if Tyler Beede has an amazing spring he could be someone that's blocked, but I don't anticipate that happening.

Oh and someone's got to toot my horn, sure as hell won't be you guys :D

Well done sir. He was someone I thought they should target too. Rebound candidate and if he sucks, low cost in a sunk season. If he can be flipped for anything at the trade deadline, anything, it’s a win. Hope we’re still out on Machado and Harper, although I’m sure they’re out on us anyway. Wouldn’t have minded LeMahieu at his price/years, but he probably didn’t want to sign here for the same deal. Love JoeyP, but I think he’s done. Back issues suck.

As for this year, I’m really hoping that they keep the good relievers like Watson and Smith unless someone is willing to way overpay. Hoping that Samgarbagejizza and Melancon can have good enough bounce back years to trade at the deadline.

Good evening gents. Couple questions for you:

1.) Anybody know when our new, analytical, hot shot, President of Baseball Opps starts?

2.) How have y’all been?

Updated to account for the recent adds...

———————————————————

Of course there will be more changes, but as the roster sits now, here is what I think the 25 looks like...

Bumgarner
Samardzija
Rodriguez
Pomeranz (replacing Stratton)
Suarez

Venditte
Smith
Watson
Holland
Dyson
Melancon
Bergen
Moronta

Posey
Garcia

Belt
Panik
Crawford
Longoria
Sandoval
Hanson

Duggar
Williamson
Ferguson
Shaw

———————————————

I really liked what I saw from Stratton at the end of the year. I am not thrilled with bumping him down to Sacto. But the potential payoff with Pomeranz (a mid season trade) is worth giving him a looksee. There will be injuries and opportunities for him as the season goes anyway.

I, for one, am not disappointed by the lack of activity. This is what I wanted to happen last year.

Sure, itis more fun to cheer or gripe the latest big signee, but this team should not be added to.

‘Twas a joke. I agree, I think I mentioned as much in a post at the outset of the offseason.

If it makes you feel any better, I still loathe Longoria and Samardzija. Maybe my two least favorite Giants since Marvin Benard and Armando Rios. I feel bad, it’s not their fault that they were traded here or offered an insane deal.....just can’t get over it. I hate em.

:yo: Fools seldom differ.

Sounds like the Giants are shopping Panik pretty aggressively, maybe they are thinking the same thing you are. I like him, but I wouldn't be crushed if they traded him. It's tough seeing him getting back to that 2015 production... although he seems to be an odd-year guy.

I think Watson and Smith are as good as gone, teams usually pay way too much for relievers, especially lefties.

If the Giants trade both Watson and Smith, do you see either Pomeranz and/or Holland filling those roles or do both stick in the rotation, regardless of bullpen needs?

I just don’t see Holland in the rotation sans injuries. Demoting both Stratton and Suarez is a bothersome strategy.

Good upside on him but not sure why guaranteed roster spot. If he pitches like he did in 2018, he's just wasting a spot that could be given to Stratton or Suarez.
If he pitches like 2018 (and it seems he was injured last year) then you cut him. No harm, no foul. They'll know by June.

If he pitches like 2017, you've got a) one of the best bargains in the majors and b) a great trade chip at the deadline.

Sure, at face value, the contract is a bargain with upside. However, I just don't like both Stratton and Suarez starting out in the bullpen and/or Sacramento. At least one of them should be in the starting rotation. As it stands now, the rotation shakes out to be Bumgarner, Samardzija, Rodriguez, Holland and Pomeranz. I doubt they bump Holland to the bullpen but maybe Pomeranz goes there if (A) he doesn't look too good in spring but not bad enough to jettison and (B) either Smith or Watson (or both) are gone.

Generally agree, except that I doubt Holland is in the pen. I'm sure he signed with the intent to start and the Giants intend to start him. I don't know if that means Suarez goes to AAA as insurance for the rotation or becomes the long man. I also think it will be a competition between Bergen, Blach, Black, Law, Okert, Osich and Venditte for the final two bullpen spots. At least two of them won't be on the 40 man roster when the season opens.
