I don’t think there should be an autobid for G5. Not every year does a G5 deserve it. 2015 the highest ranked was a #18 Houston and in 2014 the highest ranked G5 was #20 Boise State.

I may have phrased it wrong. I do NOT think a G5 team should have an auto bid.

Nothing odd about it. It's the best format for starters.

Conferences don't care about getting left out as much as people think. The playoffs payout to all conferences equally, about $50 million a year, no matter if you send 0 teams to the playoffs, or 2. Last year the Big10 got the same check the SEC got from the playoffs.

The SEC probably got a little bit extra because there is a little bit of a bowl payout, but it's very little when you take into account only the difference between those bowl payouts and other bowl payouts.

But TEAMS do care about being left out. It can’t help his standing with members.

WRT money, more CFP games should generate more $$$.

I hate it. We will just have another controversy about going to 12 or 16 teams in a few years. The NCAA BB, started at 4 and now we have I think 68.
And people still complain about being “snubbed”.

What teams? There are teams that deserve to go, and teams that do not. If you deserve to go, then you will go. If you do not deserve to go, then cry more.

There has not been a single deserving team to get left out of the playoffs thus far, and based on history it's unlikely there ever will be. In the BCS era there were like 2 times when more than 2 teams was needed, and that's the reason and justification for the system we have now, which is perfect.

The problem is the opposite. Last year Alabama did not have a legitimate claim at the national championship game, Alabama didn't really deserve to be there. However, the other teams deserved it less, and so as virtue of having to fill the spot, Alabama gets in and makes the best of it.

The day I see 5 teams getting #1 or even #2 votes among them is the day we can say more teams are needed. Until then, any and all talk of adding in more teams is nothing more than adding in even more teams that don't belong. And when you start doing that, you've basically started to justify any and all teams to the point where it means nothing.

I feel fairly certain that unless ESPN is interested in an 8 team playoff this is going nowhere.
Only....and only MONEY will drive this. It may not be ESPN or any network(s) per se. Who knows what kind of media will be delivering in the future. Unless there is more money to be made, I can't see it happening. Money has been the driving force behind most...if not all...changes the past several years.

I think there should be "auto bids" but would be ok with putting restrictions on it (say, no teams ranked higher than "x")

I’m not debating any of that here. I’m just saying I don’t get Delany’s position. This year, tOSU surely would be in an 8-team playoff. I don’t see any reason he would consider that a “negative”.

This is the fact.

The playoff will expand the day the NCAA can find a way to make more money from the tv networks off of it that they make off of the current structure.

While i see the ability for you to say that then people will bitch about expanding to x y z.

They wont have a leg to stand on if say the p5 sends the best of each conference in. we already dont care what g5's think and lets be honest this is about finding the #1 not the #12 team. personally 8 is too many 6 is just right to make sure you have all the best. This year it isnt even a question though you could argue only 3 need to be there the rest have been exposed.

The NCAA makes no money off FBS football.

Another blowout loss in a playoff would hurt the big ten more than missing the playoffs ever would.

I want a 16 team playoff with all 11 Conference Champs regardless of conference getting in and then take the highest ranked five remaining teams as the wild cards. Now I'm not saying the five wildcards are automatically seeds, 12-16, you can seed accordingly but every conference should have a shot at the trophy.

No. No way do G5's deserve it. No way does P5 allow it. It will fuck up recruiting big time. Not going to happen with that format ever

Apparently it is 10 conferences and six wild cards, but I just figured it based on the rankings at the end of the season and it would look like this...

1. Alabama vs. 16. Appalachian St.
2. Clemson vs. 15. University of Alabama-Birmingham
3. Notre Dame vs. 14. Northern Illinois
4. Oklahoma vs. 13. Fresno St.
5. Georgia vs. 12. Penn St.
6. Ohio St. vs 11. LSU
7. Michigan vs. 10. Florida
8. UCF vs. 9. Washington

Looks good to me.

Why don't G5's deserve it? They might as well all drop to division 2 then and only allow the big 5 with that mentality. Everyone in Division 1 football deserves a shot at the Championship period. Anyone saying they don't are just elitist pricks that are scared to play the little guy.

Yep. The B1G and PAC 12...aka...Rose Bowl were much more than just resistant. They were pretty obstinate IIRC.

94-97 was just absurd. And naturally nearly every year either the BIG or PAC ir both had a team in the running for it all.
