I did a comparison of the current unbeaten teams (all 8 of them) in FBS football. Just like the CFP committee, I came up with Ohio St. in the top spot, but a surprise team jumped into the Top Four!
Unlike my regular rankings, where teams have to pass the "eye test," these rankings had no pre-determined bias. Base points were accumulated depending on whether you played an FBS or FCS opponent and whether the game was at home, on the road, or at a neutral site. Domination points were awarded on a sliding scale, depending on how bad you beat somebody. Extra points are awarded for shutouts.
Schedule performance points are awarded for the wins by the teams you have defeated, and include those team's domination points, as well.
Here's the list:
1. Ohio State 37 base points, 16 dominance points, 242.5 schedule performance points = 295.5
2. (tie) Michigan 38 base points, 30 dominance points, 187.5 schedule performance points = 255.5
- (tie) Florida St. 38.5 base points, 18 dominance points, 199 schedule performance points = 255.5
4. James Madison 39 base points, 7 dominance points, 196 schedule performance points = 242.0
5. Washington 38 base points, 14 dominance points, 174.5 schedule performance points = 226.5
6. Liberty 40 base points, 11 dominance points, 173.5 schedule performance points = 224.5
7. Georgia 36 base points, 20 dominance points, 160.5 schedule performance points = 216.5
8. Air Force 39 base points, 16 dominance points, 131.5 schedule performance points = 186.5
I know it's weird. I've still got to work the kinks out. I think the ratings show less about how well each team compares with its peers, and more about what crappy schedules the lower-ranked teams have played. I don't really believe JMU is a top four team; but I do believe they deserve to be ranked ahead of a very iffy Air Force team.
