I guess we have to give up something valuable in order to get something valuable in return, but I'm really hopin' Wheeler's not part of this. The anticipated 6 years of excellent pitching production is too much to give up for a 2-month rental, IMHO. Even if we resigned Beltran, how much production can we expect out of an aging vet? Beltran might wind up having a 2012 season similar to what we are seeing in Huff so far in the 2011 season. I'm still crossing my fingers that Huff will turn it around.

I guess it will all be worth it in the end if we repeat. That would be super special. I will support Sabes and the rest of the brain trust no matter what they decide.

The kid is just a guy in single A not exactly tearing it up yet. Don't think you can just pencil in 6 years of excellent production from him at this stage. He's not Strasburg. He could be Alderson II.

And we do seem to be able to draft and develop pitchers, I have faith we'll have someone to replace Zito when the time comes. It could be a while.

Although, with all the runs they score I could maybe see the Yankees picking Zito up at the deadline in 2013 or even 2012 if they need pitching badly.

If the Wheeler rumors are true, Sabean is an idiot. If Wheeler is the centerpiece of the deal, the target should have been Hunter Pence. Of course, landing Pence would have meant giving up Peguero or Brown and likely Runzler in addition to Wheeler, but it would have been worth it.

If nothing else, getting Beltran means the Phillies won't get him. We don't need the Phillies to get any stronger.

Getting Beltran means the Phillies will likely push harder to get Pence and that IS a bad thing.

True...

And they could use the offensive bump almost as much as we can. Take the band-box effect out, and their Offense is pretty bad as well.

And now Buster Olney is saying that the Phillies might be looking at Carlos Quentin - another player I would rather have than Beltran.

I hear what you're sayin'. I'm just thinking about the worst case scenario where Wheeler turns out to be fabulous, while we get Beltran for a 2-month rental and not win the WS, and everything winds up all for naught. Oh well, as with anything in life, you have to take risks, and I'm with Sabes no matter what he does. I really am a very positive Giants fan, and I really do want Beltran or some other productive offensive player. I'm doin' a little pantshatting with this if it is Wheeler, but you won't find me pantshatting very often.

I'd like to think that the Giants didn't get Pence because either: (1) Pence just didn't rate that highly according to their scouts; or (2) the cost of getting a good young player like him was just too much. If either is the case and assuming that the Giants scouting department is correct (if their evaluation is what kept Sabes from pushing for Pence), then I can live with the Phillies getting a player less valuable than Beltran or spending too much to get one player.

looks like the terms are Wheeler for Beltran, Giants get 5Mil in salary relief.

The 2008 Carlos Quentin, sure. The 2009/10 Carlos Quentin? Hell no.

Dude is maddeningly inconsistent, but is having a very nice year.

If Sabes is going to give up Wheeler, he knows what he's doing.

Fair enough. But at the end of the day there are no guarantees, and all Sabes can do is make the best call at the time as he sees things...understanding that his vision >>>>>>> any of ours.

I'll say it again, Giants should move Schierholtz to CF.

The Mets fans are very excited

I would be too. The only thing it cost them is a possibly better prospect from some other team, but that's invisible to most fans. And if Alderson did his job that opportunity cost is zero.

I was listening to KNBR and some guy named Joe (I believe he's the play by play guy for San Jose) was saying that Wheeler, while very good, was nowhere near as impressive as Madison Bumgarner. He said that at least at A Ball, they were miles apart as far as development. He did issue the caveat that it's dangerous to compare different pitchers/players though and that it's obviously not an exact science. He said that the earliest he'd expect to see Wheeler in the MLB is 2013 and that he's obviously got the great fastball (95 - 97mph) and a good curveball (his primary out pitch), but that his changeup was at best, still a work in progress.

If it is Wheeler, good luck to the young man and it's a bummer he's gone. That said, I'll enjoy the hell out of the next 2 months (hopefully 3 months :D) of Beltran.

So in 2013 he'll be lucky to be better than Ryan Vogelsong.

LOL. Maybe Wheeler will struggle with the Mets, play in Japan, return to the Giants in 2021, become an All Star that year, and lead the league in ERA.

Very true, my friend. Like I said from the beginning, I'm with Sabes all the way, no matter what. How can I not after last year? It's just baseball anyway, so I don't feel too bad putting my blind faith and trust in him.
