They don't fit anyone's narrative. The Flyers literally can't replicate what Vegas did. No team can. Just look at the deals they made related to the expansion draft: A look back at the Golden Knights’ expansion draft. No team in the NHL can do that without an expansion draft. Heck, Seattle couldn't do it with an expansion draft because Vegas fleeced so many teams and they learned from it.

They executed brilliantly, don't get me wrong. But the expansion draft is a complete game changer. And that's a scenario Briere cannot conjure up even if he was all the best GMs in NHL history combined into one.
I fully understand that they were an expansion team and that is a very unique scenario that we cannot utilize.

The point is that they won a Stanley Cup without having 1st round talent, let alone top 10 or top 5 draft picks, so let's not act like we must draft in the top 5 in order to eventually become Cup contenders.

Edmonton hasn't, but would you put your money on them winning one soon or never winning one with that core?

And I think keeping it recent helps your argument if anything. If you'd rather go back a little bit to include more cup wins, I'm happy to. We're looking at the Pittsburgh and Chicago dynasty level teams that were definitely built by tanking.

In my other post I pointed out there are a few contenders sprinkled in there built a little differently. LA, Dallas, San Jose, and Boston. Dallas and San Jose haven't won anything. But the LA and Boston blueprint could be followed. Michkov being the star and you draft well with your > top 5/10 picks, make some good trades, add the right high end free agent(s) and you're in business.

Over the past 20 years though, the majority of cups have gone to teams littered with high end draft picks, most of which were selected by team they won with. And in the next 3-5 years, I expect that trend will continue with the Oilers and Avs in particular. Doesn't make it a bullet proof plan or the only plan. Just seems to be the most likely way to win a cup lately.
Quite frankly, I would never put my money on Edmonton to win anything. This is their 10th season with two of the most dynamic offensive players in the world (and a maxed cap) and they haven't yet won a Cup. In fact, haven't they only visited the finals ONCE!? They are often favorites, sure, but they blow it every damn year...Lol They're like the Dallas Cowboys of the Nhl, truly, except slightly better.

I accept your concession that it's not the only way to build a Stanley Cup winning franchise...Lol

And that middle of the road, useless, asshole Laughton gets four goals in one game!!

LOL

Sure, I realize two of them were on an empty net, but he deserves it regardless. This dude is a leader and you can tell by the reaction of the entire bench that he is absolutely beloved as a teammate. There's a reason for that.

Again, the more some of you point out who isn't putting up points, the more they seem to produce, almost as if they're reading your trolling.

Big team win against another team that is technically right there with us for one of the last playoff spots. I also love that we continue to absolutely own the Wings in Philly. It's at least some measure of revenge for them taking that Cup from us in '97.

He's showed up for 2 games this season, he sucks! I hope he keeps playing good so we can finally trade his worthless ass and get a decent return. Gonna get on here and praise a dude for one good game out of 30, what a fucking joke. But yea let's keep the stud vets who only show up every 20 games or so... Dude is a Dime a dozen player, who never shows up when needed.

If anyone should be praised for an outstanding performance it should be Kolosov!

To be fair to the Cowboys, when was the last time people thought they were actually a contender? Had to be in the Tony Romo years right? His last real season was 10 years ago. Jerry will hold them back until he's gone and people seem to have caught on to that.

And I ignore Vegas because if the Flyers can't build that way then they're irrelevant to the topic of "ways the Flyers can build a cup contender".

And I never said it was the only way. Just that the majority of cup winners in the last 20 years have been built that way. In fact, 13 of the last 16 cup winners had at least one guy drafted in the top 2 by that organization. The Blues caught lightning in a bottle. Boston has sustained a contender for 20+ years by drafting well and signing the right free agents (assholes, but they give me something to hope for with the Flyers plan). And the aforementioned expansion draft Vegas. Lots of teams have blown it with top 2 picks. Sure. But not very many without top 2 picks have won the cup.

I get the Flyers stance on Laughton. If they get a crazy overpay, deal him. But I can definitely see why they're so hesitant to move him. It's clear the team LOVES him. You could almost hear Hathaway say "oh hell no, this is yours" in how quickly he passed it back to Laughton for his 4th.

I'm honestly shocked they didn't name him the captain. Maybe it's because they expect to eventually get that crazy overpay, but he seems to be the heartbeat of the team and is exactly the attitude the Flyers brass want to cultivate. I get keeping him through a rebuild.

100% correct Kolosov played great yesterday !!!

Pretty sad and embarrassing when someone sits around for 30 games just waiting for one good game by a player to troll your posts. :L

They didn't name him captain because last season he was playing great with TK on the PK and his value was super high and was going to get traded if we fell out of it. We ruined that plan by having an 85% chance to make the playoffs so we kept him.

But yet we traded a better player in Walker?

Walker would've become a free agent so we had to trade him or sign him which we weren't going to do. So getting something for him as opposed to keeping him and getting nothing was our choices.
