I assume the reasoning is, if a player can hit, then they will play. Same with Bryce Harper right now, or Ohtani awhile back as he recovered from TJ.

Obviously those are bats you want in the lineup, but my guess is this is along the same lines of thinking.

Those two are worth hamstringing your roster for. Garver is not.

When I heard the news on the radio last night, about Garver seeing time at 1B, my first thought was that Lowe's days are numbered.

For the cost, he and Semien are under producing in a huge way.

I wonder how tough it will be for the front office to give up on Lowe if that does become a possibility. Of course, it is probably too early to do so now.

However, this team will most likely be faced with several decisions over the next 4 or 5 years where they have to decide between an average or slightly above average player and a prospect with a higher ceiling.

Lowe's situation may be the first such situation to present itself. At some point they may have to decide on Lowe, being overall the same level of player as he was last year, or another prospect like Crim or Harris, or maybe Foscue as a first baseman.

A couple of years down the line it could be a decision to stick with Taveras or Thompson in CF or go with Evan Carter who projects to be better.

Suppose Dunning continues to pitch well, like a #4 or #5 starter, but Owen White is ready and he looks like he will be a legitimate #2 guy if he does as well as projected. And there is room for only one of them in the rotation. Do you find a place in the pen for Dunning or trade him to make room for White?

Making the right decisions in these areas may be the difference in being a legitimate playoff team or going to the World Series. It could be every bit as important as knowing which free agents to pursue.

I think this is the one position where defense is a huge factor but yes they do not grow on trees ha

We have several guys that we have either drafted or developed after a trade who could be here within a year or so. We have drafted lots of MIF and CF and one very good 3B and a handful of COF. First Base is way behind those other positions.

Sam Huff and John King are two we did. Ibanez was an international signing, which is basically the same thing.

I'm talking about starting players we acquired thru the draft. Huff yes but he is uncertain. Why can we not sign or trade for a 1B same as SS or 2B. We do have some good looking guys coming but until they get here we need players.
