So, to clarify, a lot of teams passed up Boychuk? Because considering the teams that were below the Pens at the end of the season last year, that's surprising to me. He hasn't torn it up, but he's done quite well and it's a fairly low risk-high reward grab, no?

Absolutely. The knock on Boychuk has been he's a perimeter player. He won't go to the dirty areas to score. The truth is Carolina didn't want to lose him. It was a numbers game. They want Drayson Bowman to play.

Obviously it's a small sample size, but he's been anything but perimeter early. He's making hits and got to the front of the net/slot in all the games thus far. Crazy speed. If this turns into a Grabner, ooooh baby I'd be thrilled.

I agree. He's looked very good so far. And his style really seems to mesh well with Malkin and Neal.

I realize it's probably a bit early to bring this guy up, but G Victor Fasth of the Ducks has been very impressive so far this season. He's been the top goalie in Sweden the past two years. The 30 year old has made it very clear he didn't come to the NHL to be a backup.

Fasth will be an UFA at the end of the season. I imagine there will be at least a few teams interested.

Rumors around about the Pens looking into Kulemin from TOR. He was Geno's linemate in Magnitogorsk.

I don't know the Pens salary cap situation, but Phil Kessel would look pretty good on Sid's wing.

They're sitting pretty actually. If they were to trade today they could take on a cap hit of 10.4 (according to capgeek, who I find incredibly reliable), and by deadline day it says 35M or something crazy :-)shock: ). That said, if I'm Shero I'm feeling pretty stingy about my prospects. He's pretty good with the trade game though. Kessel is an interesting target though. Only one more year on his current contract, and 5.4M is manageable. It would create an issue next season though. I think they resign Dupuis, Boychuk (unless he bombs), Adams, and Dustin Jeffery, leaving a spot open for him...but then what all do the Leafs demand? I'd assume they'd want one of the elite D prospects, first rounder, and an NHL guy. All in all, it wouldn't be terrible, but certainly a risk. Anyway, talked myself into that being a pretty decent idea actually.

I would love for the Devils to make a deal for Kessel. I think a change of scenery and less pressure would work wonders for him. His cap hit isn't terrible and the Devils desperately need a top 6 winger.

I was actually shocked how manageable his hit was. Even looking at the cap going down next year, it's only another year until he's UFA anyway.

43, what's with Ryan Johanson getting sent down to the AHL?
I haven't seen any CBJ games this year, but he was the most dominant player in the few games I saw last year.
Figured he was ready to make that step this year.

I think that's a good asset management move by the Jets, save a year of the ELC, there's little doubt Scheifele will be a good NHL player.

I wonder if the contract situation factored into the decision, jstew, and if they just wanted to give Taylor a cup of coffee in the bigs. He had played well down at Abby this year (along with Brust).

Edit: Taylor is a few years younger than Brust and they think he is a keeper (pun intended)

I'm hoping he's this years version of Bernier/Ponikarovsky. I know nothing about him but Lou is usually good with trades. If he doesn't pan out it's only a 5th rounder.
