My mom was raised as a Yankee fan. Lived in NY for a bit as she was an army brat and my grandfather served. She was a fan of Pee Wee Reece.Do you remember Luis Arroya his relief pitcher? Back then there were not many relievers like today. If Whitey got in trouble out came Arroya. So many good memories.
We lived in a small country and radio was your only means of getting Baseball. We only got one station and they only broadcast Yankees games. So I was brought up with Mickey Mantle. Unmatched even today.
One tidbit, i got to see Mantle one day on the golf course when a teenager here in Dallas. Solid husky guy who could hit the golf ball too a long ways. We were behind him walking the course but we were often quicker than him and his buddies in their carts so I got to watch him tee off a few times before they sped up the pace. They weren't going to let a couple of squirts like us play through but I didn't mind, it was Mantle.
