Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon knew it was ball four to Ben Zobrist, who was already headed toward first base. Even Texas Rangers closer Joe Nathan expected that would be the call after his full-count pitch.

Except plate umpire Marty Foster called a game-ending third strike -- one he later admitted was wrong.
Nathan mouthed "Wow!" when the strike was called to wrap up his 300th career save, which along with the Rangers' 5-4 victory stood despite Foster's postgame admission late Monday night.

12-to-6 breaking ball. Looked like a pitcher's strike to me!

The game wouldn't have been that close if the ump hadn't been calling strikes as balls in the 8th. Kirkman was getting squeezed like a tube of toothpaste up there. Even the TPA feed was talking about how that low and away corner he kept throwing were all strikes and TPA was getting some great calls.

Twitter is blowing up with talk of this and I'm baffled. They're saying this is one of the worst game-ending calls in history? What?? It was a wicked curve that broke a foot in front of the plate. It was a pitchers strike, man!!! Am I alone here?

It was pretty bad but the tears will dry in time.

It was a horrendous call. There's no argument that can be made that the pitch was a strike. But it's baseball. You get calls against you and calls for you. But Joe Maddon is absolutely right. That CANNOT happen in a major league game.

When you watch the video, even Nathan says "Wow" when walking up to the catcher for the post-game handshake.
