A useful idiot.
I don't know, I think an argument could be made that we are a society that frequently blames the victims as well. Which is a fact that politicians and corporations, often those judge to be negligent or worse, take advantage of. Who cares if McDonalds had been warned numerous times and that they ignored the warnings about the coffee temperature? Who cares that the old lady needed skin grafts, had McDonalds run a public smear campaign against her (at times implying she was driving while she spilled it), and who cares if we do not know how much she really got? Who cares that she wanted to settle for $20,000 - enough to cover her lost wages and medical bills and McDs countered with $800. She was stupid and greedy.
Wow, someone knows the facts of the actual case rather than it being the poster-child of litigation gone wild. McDonald's settles many coffee suits every year and sells their coffee hotter than most fast food chains because Increased Sales > Settlement Costs.
We also live in a society that often declares anyone accused of anything guilty long before a trial. And if the charges are dropped or proven unfounded that's never as big of a story as the original charges.
Gets it, gets it, gets it...
