I know they are going to change the shower room but the statue is like a symbol to PSU.

Glass walls around the showers that face the hallways so nothing bad can happen there. Finally. Been saying this for years. We're just talking just the female locker room, right?

I'd favor a lifetime ban on anyone in the program who took part in the cover-up, so they could never work in college sports again...assuming that they aren't in prison, where they should be.

But the "death penalty" for the program itself? No. The institution, which is an entity unto itself, separate and distinct from the personnel, didn't cover anything up. The personnel exceeded the scope of their employment, given that obstructing justice wasn't in anyone's job description.

And please don't call me an apologist. I'm a Buckeyes fan. I'm just trying to be objective...some of you are thinking with your hearts.

Ive heard it suggested (and i didnt read all posts in this thread so i dont know if its been talked about here) but what about making penn state run the football program and all revenue (from ticket sales & anything with a logo on it) to child abuse charities. The problem i see with this is the adminstrators have shown they will cover things up so i wouldnt put it by them to siphon off some of the revenue to university general revenue

Independent auditors needed?

I have watched this unfold it's ugly and very far reaching there is plenty of blame to go around,,,,I am a huge Joe Pa fan and thought highly of Penn state but as more info comes out the more I think they should shut the Football program down maybe all sports at Penn State,,,,I don't think it should be a perma ban,,,,3 to 5 years give the school time to weed out all the assholes involved and for at least part of the court proceedings to die down

This makes sense. There should be a cooling down period like gray said. Let the school clean up this debacle (it seems like most of the court proceedings are over) There is no doubt what went on then let them start their programs again.

A "Death sentence" is a tough pill to swallow for the tens of thousands of good students and former leaders that had nothing to do with this. Is it fair to penalize the 90% of good PSU people for the actions of a small percent?

The way I see it, any time a Penn State football game airs on TV, any time the university makes money from selling a ticket, a hot dog, any time the stadium is filled with cheering fans, it's pretty much a slap in the face to the people who were raped by Sandusky. How do you go through that and then watch 60,000 fans pack the house to root for that team? Maybe I'm off base here, I can't even begin to put myself in the victim's shoes, but that's how I see it. Every game, t-shirt, ball cap, a big giant FUCK YOU to the victims.

I agree. There's also the angle that all the kids playing for Penn State are going to be given a real rough time by fans when they're on the road. It's something they don't deserve to have to deal with, but they will just by being associated with the university. One of the reasons I want to see Penn State suspend the football program for awhile and have the NCAA give every football student there waivers so they can transfer without losing a year of eligibility and without having to sit out a year.

I've lived in Pennsylvania for all of my 43 years...and I've always hated Penn State ..( most people from Pittsburgh do).. but I wouldn't wish this shit on my worst enemy. I always thought Paterno was a dick for breaking up the Pitt-Penn State rivalry (he wanted, like, 2 of every 3 games to be in Happy Valley.)...not gonna hate on a dead guy.... but I still hate Penn State

While it would be wonderful to see an organization who knowingly and purposefully covered up the actions of a felon in order to protect their gravy train get mercilessly punished... The simple fact of the matter is this is America. We are a blameless society. Pour coffee on your lap? That's McDonal'd fault for not telling you how hot the coffee was.

I even read about a guy who sued a refrigerator manufacturer and WON because he tried to strap it to his back and carry it a world record distance. He won the suit because the fridge didn't have a warning telling him not to do it.

So nothing will come of it, mainly because of all the money at stake. Season ticket holders and alumni and all the "wah wah the whole school" nonsense. The football program, from top to bottom went out of their way to protect a person who raped kids. There should be no football program, period. And, in an ideal world, it would not be the NCAA's decision. Penn State itself would withdraw. Maybe 10 years.

But the money. So no chance in hell that's gonna happen.

Pro football teams employ TEAMS of lawyers to get their murdering, drug dealing, drunk driving, illegitimate baby having, wife beating players to serve penalties only in the offseason, so it does not interfere with their competitiveness on the field. And College is just prepping for the pros.

It's almost silly to be discussing a competitive ban. Shouldn't the entire athletic department be in jail too?

The reasons I think they should shut down for awhile, like what is forced in the death penalty, are these: The school as a whole needs to focus on taking care of and cleaning up the situation. If they keep the team for this coming year, it will certainly be a rallying point for moral of students and what not, which is understandable...but could only be dangerous in terms of refocusing the school from being about education and not football games. I know people going there...and I'm 99% sure they chose PSU greatly because of Saturdays in the fall. Yeah, they're fun, and students are going to think that way...but CLEARLY administration thinks that way too. The CNN thing released about a week ago even showed how Joe Pa had a former VP forced about because she had the audacity to say that SHE was in charge of disciplining students when they broke school policy. They forced HER out. It's a mindset there. I'm a bit torn too, because we all know how this will kill the program...but this is the worst thing to happen to NCAAF, needs to be treated as such.

I don't know, I think an argument could be made that we are a society that frequently blames the victims as well. Which is a fact that politicians and corporations, often those judge to be negligent or worse, take advantage of. Who cares if McDonalds had been warned numerous times and that they ignored the warnings about the coffee temperature? Who cares that the old lady needed skin grafts, had McDonalds run a public smear campaign against her (at times implying she was driving while she spilled it), and who cares if we do not know how much she really got? Who cares that she wanted to settle for $20,000 - enough to cover her lost wages and medical bills and McDs countered with $800. She was stupid and greedy.

(I could be wrong, but that refrigerator story sounds like most of the other 'stella awards' - made up)

We also live in a society that often declares anyone accused of anything guilty long before a trial. And if the charges are dropped or proven unfounded that's never as big of a story as the original charges.

As for the Penn State situation, I do not follow college sports so I do not know what the precedent is, but if there is evidence pointing to a wide coverup then I'd fire everyone (or prosecute if the evidence is there) involved and suspend the football program for 5 or 10 years.
