lets get real here with what the pens did. its a move THEY HAD TO MAKE. malkin is their parise. look how we turned out! letang isnt worth the price he is asking for i would have no problem moving him over malkin. i dont see fluery going back after his deal is up.

we have all seen that you can put anyone on the wings with these guys and they score goals. its a move they had to make and they will be fine with it.

Y! SPORTS

you guys beat me to it.

the khl isnt really a legit offer to many players. with that ranger kid dying there and the plane crash. is really 15 million a year tax free worth it? living where its winter 9 months of the year? and we are talking LEGIT WINTERS! face it all these players LEFT russia to come here. noway they go back not in the prime of their careers here.

Agreed, Russia is a 3rd world country disguised as a 1st world country. You also have to think of the crime, corruption, infrastructure, restaurants etc. You'd have to be out of your mind or really desperate for cash to play there.

That's just the thing though, it isn't just one quick fix with those teams. Flyers still have Pronger, they'll have to re-sign Giroux in a year.

As for who moves? Probably look to the D to move guys. Also, I don't think we really need to move too many guys, but we could bring some in. If Zajac and Henrique come back strong next year we're having an entirely different conversation.

pronger isnt an issue for them though. he wont retire and he will just stay on IR until his contract is up and then retire so yeah they are paying him but its not on the cap. must be nice having tons of money to just do that with!

bryz wasnt half bad for them this year i think they would be better suited to use the buyout somewhere else. breire is a solid deadline pickup for some team i think he ranks up top on the active playoff scoring leaders. whatever they do they do but i think the flyers have a good mix of players just need a better coach and better defense. they are def going defense with this pick in the draft maybe the devils can use that and move back a few spots?

it will def make for an interesting summer though cant wait

speaking of the malkin deal i could see them moving a guy like neal before they lose letang. while he isnt worth the big contract he will get his type of player is in short demand esp with his youth

I'm pretty sure the Flyers are still stuck, at least partially, with Pronger's cap. He's a 35+ contract, and according to capgeek this is how LTIR works:

Just because a player is on LTIR does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. In the event a player is placed on LTIR, his cap hit still counts toward the team's overall cap payroll. Relief only comes if replacing the player's salary pushes the team's cap payroll to date over the cap. The amount of relief is limited to the amount the team has gone over the cap (less the amount of payroll room the team had at the time the LTIR transaction took place), not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

CapGeek.com - The definitive source for NHL salaries, salary cap data and player contracts

devils have TONS of cap space. who knows maybe crazy uncle lou saw the storm on the horizon? lets see what he can pull off. then again just cause the devils have the space doesnt mean they will use it.

That's why, depending on who becomes available via buyout, I would prefer to try and make a deal with a team looking to unload a contract in a salary dump move. There have to be decent players on teams that are looking to lock young stars up in the next year or 2 that could get moved. Example, Pitt signs Malkin, now Letang is likely to get traded. Let's get the "Letang" of somebody out West.

It's nice to have options though.

Mark Streit just signed a 4 year, $21 million contract. That's an automatic $5.25 million per year for a 35+ player. This plus Gonchar means there is a premium on top 4 defenceman this year. Really hope we deal somebody.

Yikes, this is from the main board:

Timmonen - $6,000,000
Streit - $5,250,000
Coburn - $4,500,000
Meszaros - $4,000,000
Schenn - $3,600,000
Grossman - $3,500,000

That's not including Pronger's contract. Even if they buyout Bryz and Briere they still have a lot invested in their D corps. I believe G is due for a raise soon as well so expect some trades out of Philly.

Flyers as expected have bought out Briere, he cannot re-sign there.

I'm curious to see if Bernier is much of an upgrade over Reimer, who I thought was solid for them last year?

Now that it's officially the offseason I think we start to see the buyouts and trade speculation. I actually think next offseason you see more teams really figuring out how their roster is shaping up and you'll see more buyouts.
