Also, as noted above we have cap space. Would it really be the worst thing if Clarkson was signed for $5M instead of $4M? I don't think that you can find a guy for $4M that's going to out produce him.

Horton wants 6/$36 apparently. I would definitely not take that over Clarkson. Clarkson is younger and doesn't have concussion/shoulder issues.

Horton is actually a year younger. and when healthy, is a legitimate top line guy. I'd rather give Horton $6 mill per than give Clarkson $5 million per.

My bad. I thought Horton was 30.

What's a million dollars lol insane saying that I wish i had that problem.

5 million and another 3 for 2 guys who lets be real should be on the 3rd line. Thats a lot of money. Maybe i could stomach clarkson at 5 if we didnt have zub for 3.

This team signs all 3 let's say. None are the fastest or best skaters. wheres our speed? Where is the hustle going to come from?

I wonder if Horton was fond of PDB? If he's a PDB fan it could help in his decision making.

found this on wikipedia "Panthers head coach Peter DeBoer, who first saw Horton play at seven years old, said about his hopes for Horton, "If I'm looking for guys to do more, he wouldn't be at the top of the list. If he can give us 30-plus, I'd be happy with Nathan. There's a group of guys underneath him that I think can make a lot bigger jumps than I need out of Nathan Horton goal-wise.""

They are also apparently from the same town in Canada so Pete has followed him since he was a kid.

Hopefully they are still on good terms!

Looks like Clarkson is heading for free agency. Harrold was signed for 2 years, $800K per. I'm guessing he'll be the 7th dman/spare forward for the year?

I guess I would go $5M for Horton, but there are certainly some question marks.

1. He had the concussion problem.
2. He's having off-season shoulder surgery.

His stats aren't all that crazy impressive. At least not at a $6M/6 type deal IMO.

I guess when he's healthy, he's a 25/50 player which is really good. Injuries are a big concern for me though.

In reality I see us trading for someone as opposed to signing somebody. There will be some quality players available as a result of salary dumps (Think Byfuglien, Brian Campbell when the Hawks blew up their team). Lou's track record with trades is better than his signings.

i'm not big on horton either he seems to maybe be on the decline and his stat line is similar to clarky. i rather have a true legit first or second line player here.

kovy zajac ?
elias kingslayer ?
zubrus loko clarkson?

we need a legit sniper on either the 1st or second line

a light contract of 2 years to danny briere i think is solid. he still has wheels its not a long deal and i think he can make players on his line better. with schinder on the team i do think we make the playoffs and danny is clutch come playoff time

like i said something to keep in mind is the shootout. a better shootout record last year and we might have been able to sneak into the playoffs.

I personally don't want any part of Briere. If Horton is a health risk then Briere certainly has to be as well. A small breeze could give that guy his next concussion. Horton may not be a sniper, but he's not really comparable to Clarkson in my opinion. In a good year Clarkson is a 20 goal scorer. In an average year Horton is a 20 goal scorer.

I don't think it'll matter though, a lot of teams are going all in on Horton, I'd rather we not get into a bidding war for the guy. A team like Edmonton would be a great fit for him.

yeah you know what i am fine waiting a season. sure i want to make the playoffs and i think we can if we get great goal-tending. dont go out and spend money if the player doesnt command it. move some d men let the kids play there i think we will fight for the 7th 8th seed sneak into the playoffs maybe make a move at the deadline and then see what the ufa class is next year

i agree with that but thats why i would want nothing longer then 2 years. he loves south jersey so the devils do have that going for them if he really wants to stay in the area take a pay cut and stay. worse case they sign him and look to move him at the deadline he would be in very high demand

Ever since the 06 series when we played Tampa Bay I've been a huge fan of Vinny and St. Louis. He's not the same player he was but he still put up I believe 0.88 pts/game which isn't bad. I would love Vinny on the Devils but I have a feeling somebody will throw some insane amount of money his way.

Damn, Dreger reporting Vinny to Philly, 5 years 4.5 per. How did they pull that off?
