Got a buddy who has done some officiating, he says if Toney had looked over it would be common for the official to motion him back. My buddy says he didn’t look over though.

I've heard that too and that the player has to look at the ref, he's not just going to just tell the player. Also heard that it's a courtesy, not something that's required.
