"The Final Countdown"
Kirk Douglas
Martin Sheen

An American Aircraft Carrier gets swept back in time to Dec. 6th, 1941, and you guessed it, near Hawaii.

It's riveting. F-14's crushing Japanese Zero's. It can't get much better than that.
Of course you'll need to suspend disbelief

Have a lot of feee time, looking for some great movies to watch and looking for recommendations. In the past I had compiled a huge list of films I wanted to see, but got a new phone and my notes vanished. Love older films by Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock.

Love Film Noire: A Touch of Evil, and a modern day take on Film Noir which was China Town.

Any films regardless of the film’s age that anyone who is a fan of cinema should watch?

Nice list. It's nice to see some of your personal favorites (From Russia with Love for example) on someone else's list. :D

Is this in order?

Orderish. A movie at the top of the list is preferred over a movie 20 movies down but not necessarily 5 movies down.

How can you have Once Upon a Time in America and not list Once Upon a Time in the West?

Fair question. I didn't find that movie as impactful. Henry Fonda as a bad guy was really jarring for me.

I am working on creating my top 200 list. Currently at about 125 or so..

The Godfather: Part II
Pulp Fiction
Full Metal Jacket
The Godfather
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine is such a great movie. Its hit the Charlie Kaufman curve just right. I personally think that Synecdoche, New York is his most powerful movie but its too depressing for its own good.

Completely agree. Kaufman's films are all well done and thought provoking but sometimes they just seem too depressing(Syncedoche) or weird(Being John Malkovich).

Eternal Sunshine created such an incredibly thought provoking premise and really executed it to a T. And they completely stuck the landing. IMO, it is the best film made this century.

FYI, they apparently had numerous endings of the film that ranged from showing them as old people together to them breaking up again. IMO, they chose the perfect ending.

I do think Eternal Sunshine is a better movie to watch when you're single. Its designed to make you think about the last breakup you had and if you're in a happy relationship then it might make you think about a future breakup. It puts the movie in a weird niche for me but its probably somewhere in my top 50 movies.

I think it works regardless of your relationship status as long as you had a reasonably long relationship that ended in a break up in your life. IMO, that's the whole point of the film. When the break up first happens you are miserable and wonder if life will ever be bearable again. Over time the pain subsides and the fond memories that were the reason you were in the relationship in the first place come back.

Because of that it was his favorite role according to Hanoi Jane.

Once Upon a Time in the West was one of the greatest westerns of all time.

I just wished they had more ass kicking by the Nimitz in that movie. I get why they couldn't but still it would have been awesome having the F-14s do a fly by of the Yamato or the Akagi and watched the absolutely terrified looks on the faces of the sailors.

I get that argument. Lots of other people loved it. I liked it but I didn't love it. But I saw it probably 30 years ago and maybe I should re-watch it.

Totally cool. Fonda gets to r*pe and murder, shoots a kid, hangs people and laughs.

Loved it.

You might be right but the gist I always got from how the movie ended is that the movie is structured in a way to be about the relationship you're currently in. People are complicated, finding that connection is special, and all relationships take a lot of work. Thats my takeaway.

Most of us have had relationships with a user and an abuser. I think most people would gladly erase those memories. I also think that once you get to the point where you are getting married, having a honeymoon and certainly having kids then the whole concept of the movie seems a bit juvenile. No one in their right mind is erasing their kids.

Its just weird that its a movie I really liked in my 20s but have had no interest to revisit in my 30s. I might need to watch it again to see if it still holds up.

I liked that movie too.

Kind of like books I read where ships end up in alternate universes fighting strange creatures.

Interesting take. Certainly the entire concept of the film requires a situation in which erasing someone from your memory would be desirable. Clearly someone you married and had children with couldn't really be erased. The premise kinda requires that erasing the memory of that person is feasible.
