I hope it is just to protect the team from losing him, and he would still pursue a long term contract.

Gotta just be a ploy, that or we're going to be starting several UDFA rookies next season in order to stay under the cap limit...

$36 million is a crazy cap hit for any single player.

If Suh wants to be a Lion in 2015 he will be. It's all on him wanting to stay or not, IMO, as I think Mayhew will do whatever he has to do in order to re-sign him (which wouldn't be franchising him).

If the CAP were to rise to 140 mil, over the current 133 mil, you must remember that the Lions currently have 40 player's signed for 2015 at nearly 119+ mil and that figure includes Suh at 9.7 mil for his pro-rated restructure only. If the franchise tag were used on Suh, that 20% increase of last years cap hit (22,412,500.00) now becomes 26,895,000 + that remaining restructure of 9,737,500.00 = 36,632,500.00 mil cap hit for 2015. That wipes out the teams entire remaining cap space while still needing 13 roster spots signed, which would include draftee's and 10 practice squad players signed.

Franchising Suh is ill-logical.

Take a good hard look at Detroit Lions Salary Cap - Over the Cap

Then look at all the roster spots that need to be filled by the 2015 FA 2015 Lions free agents

Then go back at really study the names of the current signed players for 2015. It just might make you shake your head.

No chance.

Mayhew should be fired if he did. 36 million is to much for JJ Watt for 1 year. roughly 1/5 of your salary cap for 1 player.

nearly 1/5 of your salary cap. is your salary cap 180 mil. my math 36 mil x 5 = 180.... 36 mil of a possible 140 mil cap space comes to just over 25%...

just sayin... there's a big difference in that 5% of your calculations... meaning your 1/5 and my 1/4

Roughly 1/5 as the number I had heard would be over 150 next year. Not sure that is accurate but still 1/5 or 1/4it's to much cash and would cripple all contracts for next season and with 22 FA you then limit what you can do.

Mayhew can franchise tag him. Still only has until July 15th to hammer out a new contract. Once that deadline hits and no new contract, that would then mean that 36 million comes to fruition because then you can only do a one year deal.

Sure you can franchise him, but Mayhew better know a deal can be hashed out. Otherwise as TP said. Bunch of UDFAs playing. That is after cutting Bush, Tulloch, and others to free up space.

Gandy, Mayhew has to stay within/at/under the parameters of Cap Space, once the Cap Space number has been established and the 51 man roster minimum set. That's my understanding of how it works. Dr. Evil-er can step in any time and denounce my statement.

2015 NFL important dates

February 16: First day for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players

March 2: Prior to 4:00 p.m. ET, deadline for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 10: Top-51 Begins. All clubs must be under the 2015 salary cap prior to 4:00 p.m. ET. All 2014 player contracts expire at 4:00 p.m. ET. The 2015 league year and free agency period begin at 4:00 p.m. ET.

^^^^ yep.... and it won't be all that easy, IMO, to just sign him.

I did not know without him actually being under contract, that the adventual tag price counted towards cap until deadline to strike a deal of 7/15 passed...

There are so many ways for a GM to get around the cap. I just figured that was another one.

Thanks Blue.

Old news. Get it done Mayhew.

This is old news, but it is also the first time that Mayhew said it was possible instead of just fan speculation. I always figured he would not even consider it.

Franchise or Transition Tag – any player who receives the Franchise or Transition Tag (other than the Exclusive Franchise Tag) is still technically a Free Agent, but is restricted by the Tag. A player under the Tag does count against the Salary Cap, at the amount of the Franchise or Transition Tag tender amount.

He said it a long time ago. I've linked it several times.

Great to see Mayhew repeat what he said before the season, that tagging Suh was an option. If Mayhew finds a way to keep Suh it makes up for all the shit he messed up on. Go get em, Martin!

Mayhew has to say something other than Suh wants to bend the franchise over and we had a great season but don't expect the defense to be as strong because no way in hell do we pay Suh what he wants but some dumbass like Snyder will.

:L

Tagging him puts a one year $27m guaranteed contract on the table. The Lions can not withdrawal the tag if he signs it. How long do you think it would take for that to be signed, scanned, and sent back to the Lions and NFL offices?

My guess is about 2 minutes. It takes 30 seconds for his agent to forward it to Suh. 30 seconds for Suh to print it. Another 60 seconds to sign it, rescan it, type in the recipients, and send it.

$27m is half of the total amount guaranteed in the Watt contract. No player in the league will be paid more than that next year and he will be a FA again the next year. The only way franchising him is an option is if the Lions plan to play Iron Man football next season cause they wont be able to have a full 53 man roster.
