I keep reading he had arm problems last year. I admit I don't remember him, but those that do say he is filthy. Hit 103 and averaged 98.3 with his best pitch being his slider. I just thought we gave up a lot for him, but who knows.

They made it sound like he was shut down at the end of the year because of an elbow issue. Not as bad as Munoz was when Jerry traded for him, but something to keep an eye on cause much like basically everyone on the pitching staff, pitched the most they have last year

Heath Hembree - our latest acquisition to get cut in spring training. The has been washed up since 2020. Over the last four years and 100 IPs with six different teams, the guy has compiled 7.00 ERA with 26 homeruns surrendered. But he somehow managed 8 saves with the Reds two years ago so I guess that is what sucked JD in.

FTR, I like the Santos acquisition. Kid is only 24 and isn't arb-eiligible until next year. They needed someone to pitch the 6th-7th innings to fill the gap to Brash and Munoz. I'm not sure he'll be as good as Topa was in that roll, but he's 8 years younger and probably hasn't peaked yet.

I don’t think he has peaked yet either. I’ll keep comparing him to Berroa where they throw super hard but had control issues. Santos at least figured it out. But damn in the 7-9 batters will be facing 102, 98 and 102.

It appears they now have 3 potential closers, but it seems they are all the same in that when they are on, they are unhittable, but when off they are real off.

I'm with you here, in that it feels like a lot to give up and (to me) like JD got absolutely fleeced.
I'd never heard of him before yesterday, but Santos' numbers in the majors don't look like something you'd want to count on in leverage situations (1.3 WHIP out of a reliever seems like it should project to a high 4 or worse ERA, not mid 3, and mid 3 ain't good for a reliever), and his minors numbers look downright alarming. I don't know why you'd expect better out of him than Berroa, and Berroa is a year younger, with a year more of team control, plus we gave up other non-zero value assets.

Well I hope we are wrong. My thoughts were exactly like yours but every baseball guy on twitter was going nuts about this guy and saying we gave up nothing for him.I mean was the Corbin Burnes return much better than this? I am sure it was better, but how much better? Time will tell I guess.

I am a Mariners pessimist and for good reason...well 47 good reasons in fact. My yearly gripe is that fans continue to accept minor moves as the next big thing and it just kills me. Mariners are smart. They deplete the team, cause chaos and then make minor moves making fans think they are giving them the world. I compare it every year to the oil industry. They hike up gas prices by a dollar a gallon and make people go nuts then they lower it by 50 cents and people think they are getting a bargain. No, they literally increased it by 50 cents. No bargain. No gift. Not on our side.

This is the Mariners way and it continues to work for them. Not on the field, but on the books were it means more to them.

But I am still intrigued to see how this all plays out during the season. We should start a pool to guess how many games this projected starting lineup plays together. It is a brittle group to say the least.
