Could have been that or anything. Regardless, it made Smart lose his cool. That was his purpose apparently.

it looked like he said "get out of my face" right before smart pushed him. we have no clue what was said to make him run up to him though

it doesn't matter what the fan said.

Smart has to be suspended for the rest of the season.

His Oklahoma state career should be over.

The fans are completely off limits. Under no circumstances is there anything other than a zero tolerance policy.

Okie Lite has to bring the hammer. It might seem like overkill, but it has to be done.

Seems a bit stupid. Even if the guy did say the n-word I'm guessing he'll be suspended for some amount of time. If he did say the n-word then it makes Smart's reaction at least understandable, but it doesn't make it right or mean that it should go unpunished.

You are battling in the last moments of the game. Your team is losing. You are the leader of the team. And you are both listening and worried about what 1 fan says in the stands??? To the point where you risk the game, your season, and your future NBA career over it and physically attack an old man who was not a threat to you???

What Smart did is a criminal action, regardless of what was said. Smart attacked a fan and should be out for at least 5 games and might be criminally charged; my opinion, however I think it will be much worse. Reason: I hear this is the first time an attack like this has occurred. I suspect the Conference will be making a decision and the statement will be an example that everyone will know that this conduct will never occur again accompanied with a long term suspension. In addition, I hope they get a handle on what people in the stands say to players. This is not like football where fan and player separation is more distant. It's up close and the players can hear what people say. These 18-21 year old players should not be subjected to gross verbal misconduct from people in the stands. Those people should be identified and tossed.

Marcus Smart should be forced to get some Anger Management Counseling. He should not be allowed to play until the Anger Managemet Counselor thinks he is ready to be in publc. If he decides not to see the Counselor, then kick him off the team. Travis Ford should be fired for letting it build up to this and not taking better control of the situation. The Refs of the of OSU vs TT game should not be allowed to ref another game this season for not handling the situation better. It could have easily escaluated into something more if any fans would have confronted him, while storming the court.

Nobody can control what a fan may yell or say in the stands. They can escort any fan out of the arena or get them banned from future games. Security will no doubt be increased court side in every venue. Smart could have gotten an official to eject the idiot fan. Instead he lost his cool and put his hands on a disruptive fan. The Big 12 hierarchy will need to send the message here.

It had to be something racist what choice of words could someone put together that would make smart react like that? if you honestly think that man didn't say something down right offensive to make a player want to go into the stands and shove him in front of his wife YOU ARE IGNORANT...

with that being said smart should be suspended one game and an investigation should start on that guy and could face a suspension from going to the games the rest of the season

The Texas Tech "fan"(idiot) was giddy that he got that reaction from Smart. He relished getting Smart to push him. Smart gave him what he wanted. That's where the word "fan" comes from. "Fanatic".

I am curious what the guy really said to smart to set him off. Either way I'm guessing it can't be any worse than the things the student sections say. smart should be kicked off the team for this and it'll be a disappointment if he isn't.

The refs review so much these days. Did they not have video of it at the time where they could see Smart should have been tossed?

Really surprised about the reactions. A few years ago, Texas was playing at Okie State and a Longhorn went after a loose ball and ran into a female fan standing next in front of the seats. She was pregnant and he barely bumped her, but a male twenty yo Okie went face to face with the Longhorn player and the Longhorn body slammed the Okie. IIRC nothing was done to the Longhorn, no foul, no TF, no punishment.

Again, not excusing Smart at all, but check out the fan at the 35 second mark from another game. A real piece of work this guy. This was posted on an NBA board regarding Smart flopping, but concerning this altercation.

Aggie Basketball - Bryan Davis Dunk and Tech Fan - YouTube

John Lucas III also said that he remembers that fan from when he was playing. Said he said some pretty nasty stuff.

I am not saying that Smart should get off scott free, 1-2 game suspension. But Tech needs to get info on this fan because he obviously has a past history for being a dick. I don't care if he is "someone's grandpa". He should set an example for those grandkids.

Exactly. Paulie from the Dan Patrick show said as much last night in several tweets. This was one of my favorites.

I think the majority of us all agree on some key points here. Smart should be suspended, but the length of suspension should depend on what the guy said. The guy knows he fucked up. He said as much in a text message to his buddy: "Yeah, I kinda let my mouth say something I shouldn't have. I feel bad." He says it wasn't anything vulgar, and he maintains that he didn't use the "N" word. I'm sure there will be a pretty big investigation into exactly what was said. I get that he's a fan, but I think that TT should do the honorable thing and suspend the fan (again, length depending on what was said). Fans shouldn't get a free pass to talk shit to a kid face to face. That's certainly under the same banner as un-sportsman like, as what Smart did (although not to the same level).

Ultimately, this was a bad night for CBB. Listen, I'm a huge CBB fan, and I've been known to say some foul shit. But that's up in the stands along with thousands of other fans. If I have an opposing player right in front of me and I pop off at the mouth, I am obviously provoking him, and trying to get a reaction. And, I should be held accountable. Period. Obviously CBB can't go around justifying some physical attacks, and not others. So Smart has to be suspended. But it's going to have to be a judgement call as far as what the guy said. It's possible that Smart overreacted, and it's possible that Smart actually did show restraint based on what was actually said. We just don't know yet. I'm not saying that Smart's actions are in any way justifiable, but if the fan really said some obscene shit, then I could see him only getting a game or two, because of the severity of the provocation. We just don't know.

What we do know is that the fan was obviously trying to provoke Smart, and he should be held accountable. We also know that Smart let his emotions get the best of him when he shoved the fan, and should also be held accountable. Whose punishment should be more severe depends on what was said. But punishment should be doled out to each.
