1st Quarter 6:40
2nd Down 10 To Go

Formation: Ace Double Tight; Tight Off Right - WR Left Shift In
Personnel: RB 2 TE 2 WR

Assignments:
34 - 5 Hole
45 - Block LB
88 - Drag Block RDE across formation
89 - Block Safety
15 - Block Backside LB

Result:

Graham misses block on RDE - Forcing Rawls to cut out of hole toward FS (moving FS away from Baldwin, who was assigned to block him). If Graham makes block Rawls has one CB to beat, easy first down, decent chance at a touchdown. Gain of 6.

This is going to be an issue all year with us unless Graham somehow becomes an adequate blocker. Teams are going to target him. We either have to stop pretending Graham can block and utilize him more as a receiver and insert Helfet in to block or trust that Pete having faith in Graham's ability to block means that he is capable of one day becoming a solid blocker.

Results:

Still not sure this is a read option, since Graham blocks the DE - but defense collapses down on Jackson, but Oline gets push at the point of attack and Jackson gains 5 yards.

Result:

The Bears came out in a prevent defense - must have miscounted the time out, since I have never seen a red zone prevent in this situation before. The was really their first indication that the Bears were playing to win the game, just hoping not to get embarrassed. Wilson quickly hit Kearse on the curl for a 15 yard gain - nothing can be gleaned from this call as the Bears just gave it to the Hawks.

Result:

Wilson lofts ball high for Graham to go get it. Graham never gets in a great position and can't get his feet under himself, as a consequence he isn't able to go up and meet the ball. Ball could also have been thrown a smidge higher, but that's a little picky. Incomplete.

Result:

Wilson Threw the ball to Matthews, but it was too hard and too far behind to be a back shoulder throw. Matthews had good position on Ball this time but Wilson just didn't make the play. The last floater to Graham took 4 seconds, and I would have preferred a better shot at a TD and lose the FG than to have taken the FG and given little real effort on that last TD attempt. Incomplete

So, I've done the first half - and this is the half that everyone is talking about as the issue for the offense. After looking at each play - I personally have to say that almost all the issues with the offense in the first half came down to execution - not play design. Seattle had some plays that should have blown the game open in the first half but they just didn't execute. It is my opinion that they Seahawks could have had a 21 to 28 point lead going into half time had they executed properly - which includes two important blown blocks by Graham.

Now, I've been having issues with the video, so hopefully I can get through the second half.

Assignments:
34 - Play action left
40 - Lead Action Left
88 - 5 Yard Out
89 - 20 Yard Comeback
83 - Shallow Cross

Result:

Lockette had one on one coverage with a S playing corner and got a step inside on his crossing route, putting him in perfect position for a catch and run on Wilson's play action bootleg. Very similar to the pass he dropped earlier in the game. 23 yard gain.

83 - Fake Screen protect Wheel

Result:

Graham is beaten immediately and Wilson is sacked for a 10 yard loss. This is the first play I have seen where the design is just not gonna work with the personnel in the game. Having Graham without help in pass protection is asking for him to be beat - especially when Gilliam is helping Sweezy with the LDT. Though this is the first time I remember him staying in to protect this game - if you are gonna put him one on one with a DE - you might as well let him run a route, cause he just can't do it by himself right now.

Result:
Gilliam and Okung are both beaten nearly immediately. Though Russell thinks of going to Graham, there is a safety over the wheel route and not a bad idea to not throw it. If he had more time he may have been able to find Matthews on the drag route, but cannot blame him for not seeing when he has so much pressure. He scrambles left, but is sacked for a 5 yard loss.

Wilson is give ok protection that looks worse than it was as he is hit at the tail end of the throw by a couple diving DLinemen. He is able to complete the pass to Kearse for 13 yards, but well shy of the first down. Seahawks Punt

Assignments:
34 - S Right to Left
88 - Block
84 - Block
89 - Crack
15 - Block

Results:

Helfet shifted to the end of the line and the Bears didn't compensate to the two tight set and allowed the entire line to down block them to the right opening a huge void to the left outside. Baldwin was able to sell his crack block as a drag route, so effectively took his CB out of the play and seal the entire front 7 inside the box. Rawls would get 21 yards before the S and CB recovered and took him down.

Result:

I had written a long explaination how if this had been Helfet instead of Graham the play could've been a big gain - but I decided to watch it one last time and sure enough it was actually Helfet that blew the block on the DE that stopped the play at 2 yards. Nowak, Sweezy and Gilliam deserve credit for opening a great lane for Rawls, but Helfet needs to finish his block.

Result:

Helfet redeemed himself from the last play by coming across the formation and giving a key block on the RDE allowing the rest of the line to crash down right and giving Rawls some room outside. Matthews crashing down and sealing the LBs also allowed Rawls to get in the defensive backfield for a 5 yard gain. Will Tukuafu also had several nice blocks.

What I have learned so far:
*Graham can't or shouldn't be blocking.
*Sweezy screwed up constantly in the 1st quarter. He seemed to have stabilized somewhat after that but his pass protection is below average at best.
*Our OL sucks in general.

The OL is a work in progress but if they can't progress from horrible in pass protection to at least mediocre then it is going to be a long year.

To top it off, the run blocking is also not as good as in recent years.

OL is BY FAR the worst unit the Seahawks have. I am still not convinced that this is all Cable's fault as the complete lack of money spent on the OL is automatically going to make it a weakness. I can only assume that this is by design and they are relying on Wilson's mobility and Lynch's bulldozer imitation to compensate.
