Staley should have absolutely been flagged.
From what I saw, I disagree, he got in Matthews face but Matthews initiated the mask grabbing.
With the exception of one dipshit bears fan and a few overly sensative niner whiners, I don't see too many Packer fans complaining about the call. It was a boneheaded play by Matthews, the officials were discombobulated by the whole melee and made some weird calls. That play, as controversial as it was, certainly wasn't the reason GB lost the game. The niners made fewer mistakes, gave up fewer big plays, and won the turnover battle. They deserved to win - simple as that. Seems you guys are making a bigger deal over the officiating, and I suspect it's because you're overly sensitive to the mixed reaction the world is giving one single play. Screw the play, screw the officials. It's 60 minutes of football that determine an outcome, and the niners executed better in those 60 minutes. Live with it, I know I will!

Even if it could have gone either way, he should have known better. It was a stupid decision to get involved at all.
I maintain that the guy who turns it from a late hit into a scrum deserves the flag, though.
If they wanted to throw flags to get control over the game from the brawl that almost broke out, I think they should have went with this:
1. Unnecessary Roughness on Mathews
2. Flag Staley
3. Flag Mathews again
Either that or keep the unnecessary roughness and wipe out both of the offsets. If they flagged Mathews twice, they'd probably be inclined to toss him out of the game which is probably why they didn't.
That was a tough situation for refs to sort out and try to keep some control over the game, so I can't really blame them for their ruling, and was surprised to hear that he admitted to blowing the call on Staley.
