finally!!!!! it's been killing me to hear all these "experts" criticize this play while just assuming that the Staley flag was the correct call to begin with.

If not Staley, then Boldin should have been flagged. There is no way the entire scrum was just Packers putting the Niners over their knee and the Niners not doing anything about it. The penalties should have been offset, 4th and 5. No matter how many flags were thrown against the Packers you could only accept one. A possible ejection of Mathews is feasible, but with hindsight I'm sure the Packers would trade a 4 or an unlikely 7 (Missed FG) point swing for Mathews getting ejected.

Everyone jumped on the "mistaken call" because Mike Periera indicated so, however, it seems Periera gets as many calls wrong as he claims the officials do. Its a complete waste of time for Fox to even employ him. Jeez that guy just bugs me.

Matthews is a mongoloid.

Staley never shoulda been flagged, and quite possibly, Matthews, ejected. Egregious personal foul, followed by the "first punch".

I know I am biased, but that's Bush League for a "star".

Staley should have absolutely been flagged.

With the exception of one dipshit bears fan and a few overly sensative niner whiners, I don't see too many Packer fans complaining about the call. It was a boneheaded play by Matthews, the officials were discombobulated by the whole melee and made some weird calls. That play, as controversial as it was, certainly wasn't the reason GB lost the game. The niners made fewer mistakes, gave up fewer big plays, and won the turnover battle. They deserved to win - simple as that. Seems you guys are making a bigger deal over the officiating, and I suspect it's because you're overly sensitive to the mixed reaction the world is giving one single play. Screw the play, screw the officials. It's 60 minutes of football that determine an outcome, and the niners executed better in those 60 minutes. Live with it, I know I will!

Stupid packer fans and media members should shut up now. Funny how last year after the SB loss, they all said that the missed calls we're no big deal, but this one was blown up like its the only reason the niners won, and the niners actually got the bad end of the stick. Even though we ended up scoring.

From what I saw, I disagree, he got in Matthews face but Matthews initiated the mask grabbing.

Even if it could have gone either way, he should have known better. It was a stupid decision to get involved at all.

I maintain that the guy who turns it from a late hit into a scrum deserves the flag, though.

If they wanted to throw flags to get control over the game from the brawl that almost broke out, I think they should have went with this:

1. Unnecessary Roughness on Mathews
2. Flag Staley
3. Flag Mathews again

Either that or keep the unnecessary roughness and wipe out both of the offsets. If they flagged Mathews twice, they'd probably be inclined to toss him out of the game which is probably why they didn't.

That was a tough situation for refs to sort out and try to keep some control over the game, so I can't really blame them for their ruling, and was surprised to hear that he admitted to blowing the call on Staley.

Actually, they coach offensive linemen to do what he did. He did what he is supposed to do, and thats lock up a player that takes a cheap shot.

I agree that 60 minutes determines the game, and I am no whiner sir. I was simply clarifying something that was discussed.
