In a couple of years maybe we do trade for Soto, as a rental, at a much cheaper cost.

Then in about 27 months we can sign him as a free agent.

Agree. We will in short time be rid of Miller and Calhoun without involving Gallo. I have to believe our FO is better than this.

Why would you believe that?

No news of any contract extension for Soto. It was surprising that so many thought that was a certainty.

the earliest Soto would sign an extension would be 2 years from now, in all likelihood.

really great way to tank a trade offer. why would the Nats waste rosters spots for those first 3?
well they along with Lowe who i added later would fill needs for this year and then they go away except maybe Lowe plus we throw in a better prospect package

I don't follow the Nats, but I don't think we can assume that Kole, Charlie, or Brad would automatically fill any needs the Nats may or may not have.

Padres going all in

I like the moves they have made since AJ Preller has been there, Wish he was our GM and Pres of baseball ops. Always going for it. They will have to rebuild eventually, as do all teams but I like the aggressiveness in their window. I still think they need to beef up the starting rotation some

I think if he went to a non contending club it would happen pretty quickly.
But the padres are happy to have him for 2.5 years since their window is now

Preller's a mad scientist, but can't ignore the fact that he has to make these moves just to have a chance to get a WC and then somehow overtake the Dodgers in the postseason.

i don't either but they just gave up their star outfielder & 1st baseman so there would be holes that would need filling right now and they would be gone in a few months, and they would have that time to plot their next season path

Just imagine how the Rangers could control the trade deadline in a year or two if they remain patient.

the extension talk was just white noise that armchair GM's were tossing out. there's absolutely no way that Boras would allow him to extend now, save for a 15/600 contract or some such.
