He had a rather stellar season so I can see the need to cut him some slack for showing up late.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on SportsCenter Thursday that the 49ers are "highly, highly, highly unlikely" to release Alex Smith.
Although Smith would prefer to be cut so he can choose his next team, the 49ers are either going to trade him or keep him, depending on offers they receive after March 12. Smith is owed a $1 million roster bonus on April 1, but the Niners are in a good enough salary cap situation to absorb that payment if need be. Smith remains "highly" unlikely to be on San Francisco's Week 1 roster.

Notes: 49ers undecided on franchise tag for Goldson | CSN Bay Area

The 49ers have opened preliminary contract talks with some of the team's scheduled free agents, Baalke said. Tight end Delanie Walker and backup defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois are likely two of the team's top priorities, along with Goldson, to re-sign.

The 49ers will wait until after the draft to make any promotion to fill the role of Tom Gamble, director of player personnel, who left recently to join the Philadelphia Eagles.

Joel Patten, director of college scouting, will be under consideration for the job, Baalke said.

It might be hard to bring in a variety of guys for the position anyway so I could see some benefits to waiting.

Another tidbit to highlight from above. Alot of people are skeptical the 49ers would get a 3rd.

Baalke said the 49ers "feel strongly" they will be rewarded three compensatory picks. Their first compensatory selection will be either at the end of the third or fourth round, he said.

It is on you Baalke. :) They do need to get better, have a great draft, and do well in free agency. Knock it out of the park guys.

yep, as long as he keeps drafting well, we'll be fine. cause it all starts with good drafting. at very least, avoid a bad class.

granted he's now slotted at the LOW end from here on, so our expectations need to adjust accordingly.

wow, isn't end of 3rd the highest comp pick possible? even if we line up behind other teams, still damn good.

even end of 4th is a pretty good comp pick.

The agent for Jenkins says he's showing up on Sunday to start training with Kap for however long Kap decides to train down there. I'm gonna crack up if Kap is ready to return home by then.

its good Jenkins is working with Kap and others, but Baalke said his problem was learning the NFL playbook.....think he said 'playbook'?

so while this will get him used to catching lasers, his real focus will start in TC.

ChrisPozz, sorry to bug you but I had a question, if you don't mind.

If the Niners trade Smith after April 1st, the new team obviously pays the 7.5, but is it still on our cap? Is the value we get for the trade treated as that 7.5 or whatever? If so, can we used the saved money to pay for the luxury tax (I don't know the penalty for NFL teams, I know the NBA has a dollar-for-dollar tax). Or is a trade late the same, just that we can't release without paying and taking a cap hit?

I don't want to repeat incorrect information, so I wanted to ask before saying wherever I post or whatnot. Thanks in advance for any help.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
The $7.5M is base salary that would count against the cap for the team acquiring him. We'd have the $1M bonus counting against our cap if we traded him after April 1st. If we trade him before that date the other team is on the hook for $8.5M total.

What Ray said. At least I think that's what would happen with the bonus.

Thanks, so if they are certain they will get something and waiting won't jeopardize it, they don't have a reason really to not wait until the draft, if it increases the trade, after April 1st. It would certainly make teams think that we're keeping him. But it'd be a risk if someone got tired and withdrew their interest/offer.

I was just concerned that the 7.5 would count against our cap either way after April 1st.
