Since Jones will be in his last year of his contract, an extension would have to be worked out before giving up major assets. Tyson Barrie is a UFA as is Codi Ceci. I also read somewhere that Ryan Ellis may be available for a similar package to Jones and he is signed through 2027.

If Nashville decides to rebuild, Ellis is still my guy. Yes, he’s older and that contract could get ugly by the end. But he brings experience and more importantly he’s cost controlled. You know he’s in at 6.25. Hamilton and Jones will be 8+ easy and they’re not really finished products. If you give either of them a huge deal and they take a dip to even being a #3 type dman, you’re screwed. Ellis can be a good partner for Provorov and as he gets older and regresses some, he doesn’t kill your cap.

If Nashville decides their late season rush is a reason not to rebuild, you gotta consider Jones and Hamilton. But they come with major risk for sure.

Nice win by Montreal last night. They are the suprise team this playoffs.

How about that hit by Shieffle last night i thought that kid was dead on the ice.

Gotta be a significant suspension for Schiefele. That hit might’ve been ok in 1992. It’s not in 2021. And honesty, if he goes for the puck instead, and had his stick on the ice he might’ve prevented the goal and given his team a chance to win.

IMO that was 100% intent to injure and I don’t see how you can see it any other way.

So now he’s going to put his team in a hole by getting suspended. Hes one of their best players and they’re already down a C in Stastny. Plus he gave up all hope of winning Game 1 (even if it was just a glimmer, they still had 1 minute to try to tie it if he prevents that goal)

Barrie concerns me. He’s so offense first and his numbers are super bloated this year from playing with McDavid and Draisatl. He’s like a RH ghost IMO.

Id like Provorov’s partner to lean offense first, but they need to be able to defend against top lines too. But aside from that slot, I want dmen that play defense. The flyers have Sanheim, Myers, Ghost, and York who are offense first. Unless they move on from some of those guys, there’s not room for a 1 dimensional, offense first guy. After that top pair guy, I’d prioritize size, snarl, and PK ability.

So Hayes had core muscle surgery. Him playing with that injury would explain why his stride looked more like mine than his as the season wore on.

Agreed.

Assuming Hamilton is a pipe dream and the Flyers are forced to find a fix in the lower tiers of free agency, I’d like to see them go after Brandon Montour as a potential partner for Provy and Jamie Oleksiak to bring toughness and solid D. Move one of Hagg or Braun, with the other serving as 7th dman.

Montour was highly regarded in Anaheim before being traded to the abyss that is Buffalo. After getting moved to Florida at the deadline he began to show some of that former promise again.

I’m torn on Ghost, he did show some spark at the end of the season. If York is ready Ghost is likely the odd man out. If not, Oleksiak/Ghost could be a solid 3rd pair.

I think Sanheim and Myers will benefit from a full training camp.

Id take Oleksiak all day any day on our team.

He'd be a good addition, still gotta shoot for a bigger deal. We need to be rid of Braun, Hagg and Myers from our system and fulfill those spots with the Oleksiaks, Kassiens etc.

Im with you on this!!! We need a need a whole bunch of improvements on this team to become a contender not just one or two players as suggested on this board. I am always in favor of getting bigger and stronger and faster. However we can do that and be within the cap i am all for.

I could definitely see Ghost getting squeezed out. But I think if they go the trade route for a 1D, they're going to struggle to keep Provorov, Sanheim, Myers, and York. Unless they really do consider moving TK or Farabee. I'd rather move one of the dmen, and preferrably not York. They just have too many dmen that just aren't quite good enough. There's not room for all of them.

I'm good with Oleksiak. I think they need a top pair guy, and an Oleksiak-type, to 'fix the defense'.

Friedman mentioned Philly as the one spot he could definitely see Jones going on NHL radio today.

Brad Keffer has a story out there comparing his defense to Andrew MacDonald and stating his bad analytics together with the minimum 8 million over 7 to 8 years we would have to pay to re sign him that we should pass.

I will take him for 8 million a year if he is going to be an all star and our top defenseman.

Philadelphia Flyers - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps has an interactive armchair gm feature that let's you create or tweak a team. Realistically, we are not getting Hamilton and/or Landeskog. Top needs are a #1 RD, #2 C and a #2 G. I traded a 4th to Seattle so they take JVR. I traded Hagg for a 7th. That left $20.7 million with 16 players signed. I signed RFA's Sanheim ($4.5), Patrick ($950,000) and Hart ($1.5). Still had $13.7 with 19 players signed and still need #1 RD, #2 C and a #2 G. Signed Ceci ($2.5), Halak ($2.5) and Wennberg ($3.5). 22 players signed with $5.4 cap space left to adjust any underpayments. Slim pickings with RD and Centers. Final roster below. I don't love these changes, but we have so few movable pieces to work with.

Farabee - $925,000 Couturier - $4,333,333 Voracek - $8,250,000
Giroux - $8,275,000 Wennberg - $3,500,000 Konecny - $5,500,000
Lindblom - $3,000,000 Hayes - $7,142,857 Allison - $925,000
Laughton - $3,000,000 Patrick - $1,000,000 Aubé-Kubel - $1,075,000
Laczynski - $925,000

Provorov - $6,750,000 Ceci - $2,500,000
Sanheim - $4,500,000 Myers - $2,550,000
York - $880,833 Braun - $1,800,000
Gostisbehere - $4,500,000

Hart - $1,500,000
Halák - $2,500,000

So, not that long ago the hype was that Hextall built a great pipeline of D-men through the draft. Provy and Sandheim are the only keepers. Ghost has value somewhere. Did the flyers get a reasonable return for the draft picks used ?

Provorov is the most disappointing of the bunch at this moment to me to be honest. He was 7th overall and I think you hope to get a true #1 there, rather than a guy that looks more like a #2. Sanheim being a #3/#4 is okay for being 17th overall.

Ghost was a 3rd round pick. Myers was an undrafted free agent. So even though both are kind of disappointing at the moment, based on their acquisition position, they’re OK. Hagg as a 2nd round pick looks worse.

I think it’s fair to say Hextall did ‘ok’ with building the defense pipeline. But at this point, just ‘ok’. He didn’t hit anything out of the park and that’s what’s hurting the flyers right now.

Lappy named head coach of the phantoms. I mostly hate that choice. Guy’s got a lot of heart and we love him for that. But he was mostly a shit player by the end. He was a shit PK coach. And he was a shit player development coach.

I don’t expect much. But I suppose getting him away from the Flyers is a silver lining.

Good post and i like the players you have plugged into the spots where we need help. However i think you nailed it on the head when you said we have so few movable pieces to work with. Hence we can only put together a middle of the road team as per usual

I agree with this.

Problem for me with Hextall is he concentrated so hard on getting defense he didnt do anything for the offense.

Now were stuck with just OK defense and not much in the future on all around offensive players.
