1. Doesn't make him necessary
2. Doesn't make him necessary
3. Doesn't make him necessary
4. Not as much pop as Fitzgerald
5. Doesn't make him necessary
6. Kim's offense may regress as well, Fitz has earned a full time spot and should still be decent with regression
By that metric, nobody is "necessary." Silly word, which I assumed you meant to mean "useful.'

He'd be VERY useful unless he's too hurt

The level of useful varies from player to player and from team to team but any big leaguer could be useful. Doesn't make it necessary for the team to sign them. I don't see a glaring need for the Giants to sign a league average hitter to play the middle infield, especially one coming off a serious injury to his throwing shoulder.

I agree it's not "necessary." But it would be pretty "helpful," depending upon his health.

Okay, changing the word to "helpful", I don't see how it would be "helpful" for the Giants to sign a league average bat whose specialty is his glove work and his shoulder could or could not affect said glove work. Why spend the money and create a roster jam in the middle infield when that is not the biggest area of concern for improving the roster?
Also, I noticed that BBRef rated his 2024 season with a dWAR of only 0.9, after posting 3 seasons before that between 2.1 and 2.2. I am curious why that is the case. I know that Chapman rebounded nicely in 2024 after having a couple of lower dWAR seasons but he wasn't coming back from a shoulder injury either.

Kim was hurt a good portion of last year. And even then put up 2.6 WAR. When healthy he's a 5 WAR player. Will he be healthy? I can't say. But if he IS healthy a 5 WAR guy isn't clogging up the infield...he's a borderline All-Star.

2024 WAR: Chapman 7.1, Adames 3.1, Fitzgerald 2.7, Wisely 0.5, Villar 0.2, Schmitt 0.2

I mean, this isn't even really a question unless you think he won't be healthy.

This is the one reason I say offer a 1 year contract to prove himself. I think he will take it to be with his buddy Lee and his old manager. Fitz will be the full time 2nd baseman for a couple months as Kim heals and then slowly starts backing up the infield. I really don’t think it is a bad choice to have many options. Casey will be the backup for the first two months. If the Giants don’t believe Kim has it anymore release him and continue what we have.

I think the dodgers having multi Japanese players supporting each other strengths each one of them. I think Lee and Kim can do the same to each other.

Jay Clam has played for just about every team at this point. He used to good, but that was a LONG time ago.
He wasn't even good in AAA last year (and he was above average for only two seasons - 2016 & 2017 - in his big league career). How is he even depth at this point?

Giants pitching coach J.P. Martinez on the staff: ‘We will have 15 or 16 legitimate starters’

My guess who he is thinking of, in no particular order:
Justin Verlander
Robbie Ray
Jordan Hicks
Logan Webb
Tristan Beck
Kyle Harrison
Keaton Winn
Hayden Birdsong
Mason Black
Landen Roupp
Carson Whisenhunt
Carson Ragsdale
Carson Seymour
Nick Sinacola
John Michael Bertrand
Sean Hjelle?
Juan Mercedes?

Unless the Giants are going to sign the top 4 or 5 free agent starters still on the market, I'm going to guess that he is exaggerating.

KLaw's write up of Tibbs, who just missed the top 100 prospect list:

Tibbs was the Giants’ 2024 first-round pick after he hit .363/.488/.777 for Florida State with 58 walks and 37 strikeouts in 66 games. He went to Low-A San Jose and hit well, going 17 for 41, but punched out 11 times with just one walk, and then went to High-A Eugene and hit poorly, going 9 for 67, with 25 strikeouts and seven walks. I don’t move my evaluations of players much based on pro debuts, given the tiny samples, the long layoff between their spring seasons and the draft, and the possibility that they’re just tired by August. I will admit Tibbs’s debut was one of two that spooked me this year, along with Charlie Condon’s, another apparently advanced hitter who struck out at an alarming rate in his first taste of pro ball.

As an amateur, Tibbs produced a lot of hard contact and made excellent swing decisions, starting with a wide base and a small stride until he got to two strikes, when he’d shorten up to prioritize contact over power. He showed the bat speed to get to good velocity and had no trouble with breaking stuff. Much like Condon, Tibbs suddenly developed a severe allergy to the slider once he got to pro ball; in limited data from Synergy Sports, he struck out 57 percent of the time he swung at sliders across the two stops, with a lot of late, ugly hacks, like he never picked the pitch up and was trying to recover late once he realized what it was. He might have been in the 91-100 range had he not had these contact issues after he signed, so he hasn’t moved much, but given that he’s a corner outfielder without much defensive value, he absolutely has to hit.

might be a couple of guys (Crawford, Mercedes, Howard, Romero) I'm missing.

There are a few names that are a stretch as starters (Hjelle, McDonald, Winn, Beck, Teng, Crawford) and a couple are no longer in the organization (Howard, Romero). My point is that 15-16 is statement that makes him sound homerish at best.

I didn’t like the pick at the time (in general…. He may well have been the best available at that pick). He reminds me of Joc in just about every way (including he visually resembles him).

I'm hoping he was tired by the time he got to Eugene and he rebounds this year with better production.

Well, looks like no Kim in a Giants' uniform this year.

He's the pitching dev guy. He's SUPPOSED to be homerish
