Sure. And maybe that is what motivated him to re-sign with the Giants after being non tendered (a day after being dfa'd).

Either FZ is a genius or an idiot. Not sure which yet.
I have no doubt he is incredibly bright. I am just not sold on his ability to build a winning sports organization yet.

I'm reminded of the line "There is a fine line between genius and insanity." I'm just not sure which side of the line this FO walks. 2021 made it look like genius. 2022 looked more like insanity. Hopefully, 2023 is back to genius.

And, to be fair, the Sabey-Sabes FO was pretty crap until the ‘06-‘09 drafts (where they had amazing draft position thanks to their crappiness) and having insane post season luck in 3 of 5 seasons.

Though I still have the opinion that the Giants 2008 draft is one of the most amazing drafts by any team in the history of the MLB draft.

Pete Putila (The new GM) was on KNBR this am, and he was asked to name a few prospects to keep an eye on. Obviously Harrison and Luciano were discussed. And Schmitt was asked about specifically by Murph. But Putila brought up Brown and Bailey as guys who the team are really paying attention to right now.

Brown is a bit older than preferred for a prospect, but he was drafted as a senior and he had one of the more dominant seasons in the minors we have seen in a while (‘10 Belt comes to mind). Bailey was a 1st rounder, but has not put up numbers that casual farm-heads have gotten excited about. But I put a lot of faith in casual statements by people “in the know”. If they are talking about someone, there typically is a reason for it, and pedigree rarely has anything to do with it.

Not sure that is always true. There can be other reasons someone in the know is bringing up a player. Maybe they really are disappointed with the results thus far but are so invested in that player's success that they will still build him up in the press. Egos are involved. Not always, but it happens.

Sure. There is always someone trying to play 3D chess.

But Putila is new in the org and has no skin in the game of propping any of these guys up for ego reasons.

And while Bailey has not necessarily shined in his time with the org, he has continually gotten rave reviews about his defense.

True, Putila is new, but his boss is not. Still, your perspective is more likely. Unless Bart can start hitting this year, Bailey will probably be the catcher of the future.
Man, prospects are so dicey. Why can't we just have a perfect world where Bart and Bailey platoon? Bart provides the thump and Bailey provides the defense.

I think one detail from the Giants 2022 season that gets overlooked is that a lot went wrong and they still managed to go 81-81 with a +19 run differential. Their expected win-loss record was 83-79. That team was not far from being an 85+ win team even with just slightly better defense/bullpen. It would stand to reason that incremental improvements in the bullpen, defense, and back-end of the rotation along w/ a longer lineup should improve overall record. Plus, playing the Dodgers/Padres 13 times in 2023 rather than 19 should help as well.

If you combine all of these factors, it's probably why ZiPS projected them to win 88 games this year. I think that's high, but you can understand why the projections might be optimistic.

Anyone watch the game today? Schmitt had an error, but I heard he looked good in the field. Sabol went yard (as did Schmitt). Love to see that. The pitching was horrid, but none of the pitchers today are expected to make the team this year, so who cares.

He had a really nice grab on a smash down the 3b line where he popped up and threw the guy out. Took away a sure double. He also had a couple bouts of mittfuckery and an absolute BOMB.

Mixed bag.

The pitching wasn't horrible...except for this Strotman guy. 27 yo journeyman, never pitched in the bigs, local kid IIRC from St Marys. 6 batters faced: 2 hits, 4 walks. all scored.

bottom line: they're going to hit HRs, they're going to pitch.

It's the D that will make or break their season.
