Why the defensive concern? Albeit a SSS, he did have a 0.2 dWAR in only 1/3 of a season. That's enough time to spot any trends.
I have next to zero faith in defensive metrics. And I agree that he hasn’t shown me enough for me to know either way yet. But his rep from the minors was that he wasn’t much of a defensive player.

Players aren't as static as they used to be. There's so much money at stake for them - it's a huge incentive to up their game.

There's so much available in terms of support for a player to improve. I went to the Giants website recently. They even have a team opthamologist. Support like that was unheard of even a generation ago.

Added note: I didn't realize that he was the PCL MVP last year.

Unless your name is “Joc”. Then you just laugh when someone points out your defensive limitations and then tell that person that ain’t changing.

If I had a cumulative salary of almost $50mm, I too might get a bit peculiar as to which activities I choose to engage in henceforth, and be a bit vocal about it myself.

At which point I would lose all respect for you and want you off my team.

Sooo...escalate the tension, AND make it personal. Who's the clubhouse poison now?

The guy who has stated publicly that he has no intention on working on the flaws in his game. Particularly when that flaw effectively washed away all his positive contributions to the team by his strengths.

Losing respect for a guy and not being a fan =/= taking my ball and going home.

Seriously?
Is a teammate bitching about Joc gonna change Joc's mind? NO

Does a teammate's bitching about Joc accomplish ANYTHING positive? NO

Oh, but it makes the teammate feel GOOD momentarily, because he thinks he's RIGHT.

Maybe the best course of action for the teammate is to shut his mouth and do his job.

This went in a really weird direction. When I said “off my team”, I meant as a fan. I never said (meant) anything about teammates calling each other out. Though, I would imagine that other Giants players heard the same interview I did and took note of it.

Taylor Rogers had the 8th-largest unfavorable variance (1.44) between ERA and FIP in 2022. The Giants are likely counting on some positive regression in 2023 for Rogers, but a move to a more pitcher-friendly ballpark should pay dividends as well.

Unlike his brother, Tyler, Taylor does record a fair number of strikeouts (11.8 K/9 in '22), so he is not as reliant as Tyler in terms of relying on good defense. The large variance could just be a product of poor luck as his overall numbers were not radically different last yr

Brisbee today:

Sam Delaplane, a right-handed reliever with local ties. He has goofy, goofy, GOOFY strikeout numbers over his minor-league career, and the Giants have been very patient with him, stashing him on the 60-day IL after claiming him on waivers, just waiting for him to get healthy.

He’s healthy now, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him mow through the upper minors. In his Double-A debut in 2019, he struck out 58 batters in 37 innings, with a 0.49 ERA, and if those numbers don’t make your monocle pop out and your bow tie spin, nothing will.

Yeah, he looks good when he is healthy. I just haven't figured out why the Giants have added him twice to the 40 man roster, place him on the 60 day IL and dfa him. No one else has claimed (obviously) either time so the moves have been puzzling (especially the 2nd stint on the 40 man roster).

I think Grant intimates its pretty good gamesmanship by FZ to "hide" him and expose him at the perfect time to be able to keep him.

Guess we'll see, but his peripherals are amazing.

The 2nd 40 man roster add didn't make any sense. He had gotten activated from the IL in (I believe) Eugene and was shortly added to the 40 man roster. Why? He didn't risk exposure during the regular season just because he started pitching. Now, had he put up good numbers in the minors for the rest of the year, I could understand adding him to the 40 man roster in the offseason. Or, maybe he would have skyrocketed through the minors, had he been healthy, and gotten his contract purchased before the end of the year. But why the need to add him when he was under contract already and couldn't get plucked from the minors by another organization?

Complete WAG here, but maybe that was used as some kind of carrot for his recovery? Minor leaguers on the 40 make more money than minor leaguers not on the 40 (I believe), so maybe it was more about internal stuff than actual roster management??

Maybe? But then he went back on the IL for the rest of the year within two weeks of being activated. Why put him on the 60 day IL for the rest of the year, only to dfa him again in the offseason?
