Sounds like the Padres are looking to trade Wil Meyers at all costs, including giving up prospect talent to get rid of him.

Thoughts?
The ol' "pick up a mediocre player so he won't harm you any longer" trick, eh?
(must be read in the voice of Don Adams. If you have no clue, watch YouTube videos of Maxwell Smart).

Zito.

2 championships in his tenure absolutely equates to “working out”. And he was vital in ‘12.
He was vital in one of three championships. Obviously, looking back, you don’t trade (3) birds in hand for birds in a bush. Perhaps though, we have to account for what might have been 4 in 6 or a longer window of championships.

not saying you’re wrong, just presenting one side of an argument.

Sometimes you can shove-call on the turn hoping to hit a gunshot on the river, too. And 9% of the time you do. And 91% of the time you don't.

And that's the Barry Zito story.

Mark Portugal redux?!?!

I don’t think this makes sense unless it’s a bad for bad. Like a Belt or Longoria for Myers swap. Obviously, with Machado, Longo doesn’t make sense. So then you look to Samrdzija and Cueto.....Cueto maybe, but would rather keep Samardzija for trade deadline assuming he pitches similar to this year.

I guess long term, Myers seems like a no because we’re not two years away...and if he hits like he usually does in SF, he’ll be too expensive after 2020/21.

I was thinking of that exact name when I posted but wasn't sure anyone would get it.

The problem with a bad contract for bad contract swap is that most of the guys that Myers would be swapped for would probably outperform him. The shine on Myers is long gone. He's turning 30 late next year and has yet to put in a good, full season in the big leagues (2016 and 2017 are arguable whether they were actually good or high end mediocre seasons). He's an injury risk and he under performs. I doubt the Padres would add prospects and take on another bad contract, so, no, I don't think that would be worth it.

On the surface, I REALLY like this trade. We are in a position to buy prospects, so why not do it? I have no idea if Wilson is any good, but he was a first rounder in this most recent draft. Awesome!

I'm not familiar with Wilson, so I'll let others weigh in on him. But where does Cozart fit in? Does he get dfa'd? Will he replace Longoria, Dubon or Belt?

If the Pads are willing to give up Patino or Trammel to get us to eat the Myers contract, would that be enough?

I'm assuming they would never part with Gore.

3 years of total suckitude, and several years of crap (#4 or #5 performance for #1 A+ pay), and some quality starts does NOT equate to “working out”. However, he did get a few of those quality starts at key moments.

First, it's Wil Myers.

And no thanks. He's due to earn $20M for the next 3 years. The Pads can keep him.

As mentioned, there are rumors the Giants are talking to the Pads for Myers and the Sox for Price in more prospect-purchase trades.
