Hey, you forgot Charlie Culberson, he's still around. With the compensation pick they'll get for Madison Bumgarner, the Giants will have 4 of what are currently the first 71 picks (subject to change slightly) of the 2020 draft. The last time they had 4 picks within the first 71 was in 2007, when they got ... Bumgarner.
It is hard to complain about coming out with Bum and eventually winning 3 titles, but the ‘07 draft always bothered me. 5 first rounders and only 1 hit in the bunch.Hey, you forgot Charlie Culberson, he's still around.
Seriously, though, here's to the new FO drafting better in 2020 than the previous one did in 2007.
So the ‘07 draft = Zito’s contract? It is hard to complain about coming out with Bum and eventually winning 3 titles, but the ‘07 draft always bothered me. 5 first rounders and only 1 hit in the bunch.
That whole draft was a success, merely because of Bumgarner. But the drafting success can be better. It is hard to complain about coming out with Bum and eventually winning 3 titles, but the ‘07 draft always bothered me. 5 first rounders and only 1 hit in the bunch.
They’d need to give us a prospect for Price. If they traded Betts for free, he’d already be somewhere else. Betts would require the Giants to send somebody(ies) of nite back to the Red Sox. Unless you meant both together. In that case, I think they’d use Betts as the sweetener to take Price. The Red Sox are reported to be extremely motivated to get below the tax threshold. They really want to move Price ($81/3 more years), but would consider Betts ($27.5/1 more year).
Which prospects would they need to give us to take Price? Betts?
Teams will pay in prospects for Betts. He is about to go into his final arbitration before free agency after 2020, so there is no big contract to take off the Red Sox hands like for Price. A team may ask for the ability to find out if Betts is open to a new contract before acquiring him but he will require premium prospects. They’d need to give us a prospect for Price. Which prospects would you want from the Red Sox (I'm not familiar with their org)? Price is owed about $96 million over the last 3 years of his deal. If the Giants are going to take on that debt, they better get some premium prospects in return, for little going out. Cleaning another team's mess shouldn't cost much. The Red Sox are reported to be extremely motivated to get below the tax threshold. Benintendi is an interesting one. He's been fairly consistent on his OPS through his 4 years in the bigs - .835, .776, .830, .774. He is just 25 years old but about to go into arbitration for the 1st time. BBRef projects his 2020 salary to be 4.9 million. He's still got a lot of potential so that may be worth going after. I'd be curious who we send back on such a return. Price and Benintendi for a couple of low grade (C level) prospects would look awfully lopsided. But it should be more thought as Price and Benintendi for a couple of C level prospects and 96 million dollars. He's not a prospect, but I'd consider it if they gave up Benintendi in the deal.
The Red Sox have a pretty poor system.

Hey, if a trade like the one we talked about goes through, Price pitches well and gets flipped for a couple of good prospects, I'd even be okay, depending the quality of said prospects, on the Giants even eating all or part of his remaining contract.I think that's a deal I can get behind. Especially if we end up flipping Price at the deadline.

That's a lot different though. We picked up Panda after he became a free agent. There was no negotiated deal for a trade. The Red Sox had little recourse but to eat the whole contract. It just so happened that our team swooped in to give him a shot once he was available. It's only fair. BoSox ate a good chunk of Panda's contract, which benefited the Giants more than I anticipated. One good turn deserves another.
Why do we want Betts for 1 year on a rebuilding team? The Red Sox are reported to be extremely motivated to get below the tax threshold. They really want to move Price ($81/3 more years), but would consider Betts ($27.5/1 more year).
