I’m sure you and few other guys remember he was a dude I stumped for more than any other player. I was so wrong but he ended up being a solid backup. Can’t remember the dude they were rotating him with but that I kept saying was holding him down. He still is an A defender, B base runner and is C power and average. A perfect 4th OF that I would’ve gambled my house that he would’ve been an all star.
I know you had a use crush on him. I loved him as a 4th OF but not a starter. He hustled, ran the bases hard, and could get clutch for you at times. You need those guys. Guillen was a guy that would go 1 for 4 but the one hit was always late in games and clutch. He had the misfortune of being blamed as a bad influence to Garcia.

I don’t know if it was necessarily Guillen was a bad influence. To my knowledge it was just both of them together and it turned into one had to stay and 1 was a Cy Young caliber player. They should’ve been able to keep both but it was handled pretty bad IMO. Could have at least suspended Guillen or something instead of trading him. It was like the Jeff Nelson trade except alcohol and women were the problem not Nelson being asked a question and answering it honestly.

That was Mariners management's take.
Just my personally opinion, had Freddy been a back end of the rotation guy he would’ve been dealt. I still haven’t seen anywhere there was a straw that broke the camels back, or that there was any real attempt by management to “correct” whatever the real issue was. It isn’t like they had hookers and blow or insert whatever legitimate legal issue.

I will admit I didn’t really follow the Dodgers but Kershaw seems to be intriguing with a heavily right handed pitching staff.

I am kind of done with the Paxton keep-your-fingers-crossed signings. Not sure Kershaw makes it through the year and I think if he leaves Dodgers he stays in Cali.

But with the 6 man rotation it isn’t like they need him to put the innings he usually does. But I plea ignorance on this and don’t know his recent injury issues. I just don’t know I don’t want him pitching in the WS.

    ROB MANFREDCOM, MLB

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association met Saturday for a negotiating session which lasted less than an hour.

There weren't expectations that a deal would get done, but Saturday's meeting represented a pivotal day for the league's ongoing labor negotiations as little progress was made. The two sides remain extremely far apart from finalizing an agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and an ownership-imposed lockout -- the sport's first work stoppage since 1995 -- lurches perilously close to the outset of spring training. MLB presented it's counterproposal to the MLBPA, which reportedly made concessions on core economic issues, including changes to the pre-arbitration bonus pools and slight increases to competitive balance tax thresholds. The union will fully review the proposal and presumably have a response in the coming days. Simply put, there needs to be a greater sense of urgency on both sides with Opening Day -- which remains scheduled for March 31 -- less than two months away.

  • STEFEN ROMEROOF, LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Dodgers have signed 1B/OF Stefen Romero to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Rosenthal adds that Romero, a former top prospect who appeared in 94 games with the Mariners from 2014 to 2016, has launched a whopping 96 round-trippers over the past five seasons in Japan, and could be a potential designated hitter option for the Dodgers if a newly-approved Collective Bargaining Agreement winds up including a universal designated hitter. The 33-year-old slugger is certainly worth monitoring for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats entering the 2022 campaign.

  • YAIRO MUNOZ3B, PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Phillies signed INF/OF Yairo Muñoz to a minor league contract.

Muñoz compiled an impressive 35-game hitting streak at Triple-A Worcester last season, finishing with a robust .308/.340/.444 triple-slash line to go along with eight round-trippers and 18 stolen bases across 374 plate appearances. The extremely versatile 27-year-old utility specialist also wound up appearing in five games for the Red Sox last year. He'll provide the Phillies with some additional organizational position player depth entering the 2022 campaign.

    ROB MANFREDCOM, MLB

According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, Major League Baseball lawyers said Friday in federal court that minor league players should not be paid during spring training, because they should be considered trainees.

“It is the players that obtain the greater benefit from the training opportunities that they are afforded than the clubs, who actually just incur the cost of having to provide that training,” said Elise Bloom of Proskauer Rose, a law firm that is also advising MLB during the current lockout of major league players. Unreal. Drellich adds that the argument was put forth by MLB during it's efforts to dismiss a class-action lawsuit brought forth by minor league players nearly a decade ago. A jury trial in the case is set to begin June 1. Minor leaguers, who a

Trade Candidate: J.D. Davis

By Darragh McDonald | January 23, 2022 at 11:45am CDT
After being drafted by the Astros in 2014, J.D. Davis utterly mashed in the minors but couldn’t contribute much in his first couple of MLB seasons for Houston. From 2014 to 2018, Davis produced a wRC+ of at least 134 at each stop from Low-A up to Triple-A. Those tantalizing offensive skills were enough to get him a taste of MLB action in 2017 and 2018, playing 67 total games over those two seasons, but hitting just .194/.260/.321.
Prior to the 2019 season, the Mets took a chance on Davis, acquiring him from the Astros in the hope that his bat would eventually click in the Majors. The gamble paid off immediately, as Davis had an excellent year at the plate in 2019, hitting 22 home runs and slashing .307/.369/.527, producing a wRC+ of 137 and 2.4 fWAR over 140 games. He slipped a bit in the shortened 2020 campaign, tallying just six homers but still hitting above league average with a line of .247/.371/.389, wRC+ of 118. In 2021, he made multiple trips to the IL due to issues with his left hand, but still hit well when he was healthy, as he produced a line of .285/.384/.436 for a wRC+ of 130 in 73 games.
As the season was winding down and the Mets were clearly not going to be a factor in the postseason, Davis underwent surgery to address the hand issue, with the expectation that he would be ready to go for spring training. At the time, Davis was quoted as saying that he felt he only had a 50/50 chance of returning to the Mets in 2022. “I know there’s going to be plenty of changes up and down from the front office all the way down to here,” Davis said. “My gut feeling? I could be out of here. That’s what it’s kind of leaning towards. But there’s a possibility that I could come back. I love New York. I love the fans. I love the city. It’s a flip of the coin.”
Davis likely suspected his name to come up in trade talks due to the crowded infield situation in Queens. Robinson Cano sat out 2021 due to his PED suspension but will be returning for 2022. If Cano were to get significant playing time at second base, that could have meant Jeff McNeil or Luis Guillorme getting some time at third base with Davis. But then to complicate things further, the Mets went on a wild spending spree before the lockout, which included adding Eduardo Escobar into the second/third base jumble. If the National League were to implement the designated hitter for 2022, that could theoretically open up at-bats for someone in this group. However, the Mets also added Mark Canha and Starling Marte to their outfield, alongside Brandon Nimmo, which bumps Dominic Smith into the DH conversation, as Pete Alonso should have most of the playing time at first base. All of that would seemingly only increase the odds of Davis, or someone else, being squeezed out.
Davis has played a little bit of first base and left field in his big league career but is primarily a third baseman. Most metrics consider him a poor defender, even at his primary position, with all of DRS, UZR and OAA making heavy use of the minus sign in assessing his glovework. The addition of the DH to the NL, if it comes to fruition, should theoretically help the Mets find a taker for Davis, as it would increase the ability of some team to utilize his bat without exposing themselves to his weakness in the field.
Despite his flaws, Davis has produced 4.5 fWAR over 269 games in the last three seasons, which should give him plenty of appeal around the league. He turns 29 in April and has between three and four years’ service time, meaning he is under club control through the 2024 season, unless the new CBA makes significant changes to the previous service time structure. He’s already gone through arbitration once, as he reached Super Two status prior to last year, and earned $2.1MM in 2021. Due to his injury-hampered season, he is projected to earn a modest raise to $2.7MM for 2022, in the estimation of MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz. With his ability to hit, that affordable salary and years of control, he could potentially be a useful piece for any team in the league, including the Mets.
