I still wish he was here

Like him a lot better than brocail.

Let Napoli and Barnette go.

Give Cashner QO and if he accepts then good, he would definitely fill a slot in the rotation.

Post season side note---Still trying to wrap my head around the Giraldi non challenge. If this were Wash or even Banny, it would be a forever postscript. Also. That Jay Bruce was a pretty shred pickup

As far as Brocail is concerned, I don't know what to think. Obviously the results weren't what we were hoping for, but Banister wanted a change. I also don't believe that Max wanted to be here either.

Definitely let Nap go, and to me that's a no-brainer. I'm on the fence about Barnette. As saddles pointed out, lots of relievers are year-to-year kind of guys and he did have some stretches this year where he produced.

I'm with ya on Cashner. It's more than we want to pay. But we are pitching poor, it's only a one year deal, and he may (in my mind probably) will turn it down, so we get a draft pick.

I'm still out in Ft Davis, but leaving tomorrow. Anyway, I looked at my calendar yesterday and when I wrote down my dates for the visit I put this, "Trip to Ft Darvish."

Think I think about the Rangers some? ha ha

Exactly....... the thing I keep telling people who don't want more of Cashner is that we have 3 holes to fill in the rotation and it seems likely that nobody will come from the minors to fill them. The FA pitching market isn't particularly strong, we're not going to have 3 guys come out of nowhere who are better ( unless the unthinkable Darvish + ohtani happens). Might as well bring Cashner back and go from 3 gaping holes in the rotation to 2.

It also seems that we have trouble finding pitchers who can consistently win in our ballpark and Cashner did a decent job at that.

Good idea. Have you considered money

Exactly. To me there are two questions to be asked. One. is do you want to offer Cashner the QO. The second question is do you want to try and sign him again. Not offering him the QO doesn't require a "no" to the second question?

Maybe you do offer 2 years at reasonable rate but with the market so tight I thinks he rejects. I know there are some opinions to the contrary and the pick is not like it wa before but still a good pick and worth the risk and overpay. If ever there was a year for him to get multiple years it is this year

Roll the dice. BTW. He is a hard one to project. He sure did not eat enough innings per game but he is able to still dial up a FB when needed. He seems like he pitches smart. Some think his results ar better then he pitched. I am on e fence re that

I offer him. If he takes it, granted it's at an inflated rate, but if he does, we've got a starter which we so dearly need. Don't give a damn if you/me think he's a number 2 or 4. We need starters, period.....flip side, if he doesn't we get a pick.

I'm the guy who was screaming for this team to resign Cruz when he only got a cheap one year deal, and last year on keeping MM. Not so much screaming actually on Mitch until I saw what he signed for, but still. ha

Re: Cash, if you had a chance to resign him for one year at $10 M, would ya? If you answer yes, then the difference between this and the QO is $8 mil. For me, I'll roll the dice on this "opportunity" due to our needs, the markets lack of options for us, and the cold hard fact of, "if we honestly think we can compete anytime soon, we need starters for 2018, if for no other reason, to buy us some time/space IMO."

To me it depends on who else JD is willing to go after. Let's say signing Cashner keeps us from going after Alex Cobb then no I don't want him. To me it would all depend on who else is available for us to sign.

The one complicating factor is that we are not going to find out if we get Otani until some time in December.

Suppose we pass on Cashner and can't make a deal for Cobb. I'm with Don on this one. We need starters and we better not pretend this is a perfect world are we will see Martinez and the likes back on the mound. Now that does not mean over paying for Cashner. Just don't miss an opportunity if it presents itself. If we are fortunate to land Cashner and Ohtani or Darvish we should be in great shape rotation wise.

That being said, we better learn to hit a baseball. BA/OBP must be addressed in some fashion. Leaving that up to JD.

Which is why JD is in a supremely difficult position. Best case scenario is that Cashner get the QO and Cobb is pursued independent of the Otani sweepstakes.

Well I am not too worried about the December timing. A lot of players are picked up then or later. If for some reason that we get Cashner on the QO, Otani Darvish and Cobb the we can just move Hamels. A good problem. But of course that is quite far fetched. Have this gut feeling we get Otani and maybe one more and then a 5th starter. Once again I don't think Casher will accept a QO. He can get multiple years and an off year is too risky for him for his future

You're right that players get picked up later. But that's not the point, at least for the Rangers going into 2018. We need so much help, and there's only so much money to go around, so each signing/lack thereof affects the next one.

Just for fun/thought, how would we be looking at 2018 rotation if the bull pen had not blown 21 saves? Seems as if we start thinking about every thing except how well the rotation performed over all. Give back just 10 of the blown saves and where would we be now? Is there any merit to this thought?

They'd still need 3 slots, but considering Bush for one of them would probably carry less emphasis.

Well, I wouldn't call it merit.....ha ha ha But seriously, yes it's a valid discussion point.

With 10 more wins we would have made the post season. But, think how poorly our starters were pitching (overall) late in the season. Think about how poorly we were hitting at the same time.

I don't even want to imagine how poorly the postseason would have gone for the Rangers this year.
