I still wish he was here
Like him a lot better than brocail.
Let Napoli and Barnette go.
Give Cashner QO and if he accepts then good, he would definitely fill a slot in the rotation.

As far as Brocail is concerned, I don't know what to think. Obviously the results weren't what we were hoping for, but Banister wanted a change. I also don't believe that Max wanted to be here either.
Definitely let Nap go, and to me that's a no-brainer. I'm on the fence about Barnette. As saddles pointed out, lots of relievers are year-to-year kind of guys and he did have some stretches this year where he produced.
I'm with ya on Cashner. It's more than we want to pay. But we are pitching poor, it's only a one year deal, and he may (in my mind probably) will turn it down, so we get a draft pick.
Good idea. Have you considered moneyExactly....... the thing I keep telling people who don't want more of Cashner is that we have 3 holes to fill in the rotation and it seems likely that nobody will come from the minors to fill them. The FA pitching market isn't particularly strong, we're not going to have 3 guys come out of nowhere who are better ( unless the unthinkable Darvish + ohtani happens). Might as well bring Cashner back and go from 3 gaping holes in the rotation to 2.
It also seems that we have trouble finding pitchers who can consistently win in our ballpark and Cashner did a decent job at that.
Exactly. To me there are two questions to be asked. One. is do you want to offer Cashner the QO. The second question is do you want to try and sign him again. Not offering him the QO doesn't require a "no" to the second question?Good idea. Have you considered money

To me it depends on who else JD is willing to go after. Let's say signing Cashner keeps us from going after Alex Cobb then no I don't want him. To me it would all depend on who else is available for us to sign.I offer him. If he takes it, granted it's at an inflated rate, but if he does, we've got a starter which we so dearly need. Don't give a damn if you/me think he's a number 2 or 4. We need starters, period.....flip side, if he doesn't we get a pick.
I'm the guy who was screaming for this team to resign Cruz when he only got a cheap one year deal, and last year on keeping MM. Not so much screaming actually on Mitch until I saw what he signed for, but still. ha
Re: Cash, if you had a chance to resign him for one year at $10 M, would ya? If you answer yes, then the difference between this and the QO is $8 mil. For me, I'll roll the dice on this "opportunity" due to our needs, the markets lack of options for us, and the cold hard fact of, "if we honestly think we can compete anytime soon, we need starters for 2018, if for no other reason, to buy us some time/space IMO."
Suppose we pass on Cashner and can't make a deal for Cobb. I'm with Don on this one. We need starters and we better not pretend this is a perfect world are we will see Martinez and the likes back on the mound. Now that does not mean over paying for Cashner. Just don't miss an opportunity if it presents itself. If we are fortunate to land Cashner and Ohtani or Darvish we should be in great shape rotation wise.To me it depends on who else JD is willing to go after. The one complicating factor is that we are not going to find out if we get Otani until some time in December.

Well I am not too worried about the December timing. A lot of players are picked up then or later.
Just for fun/thought, how would we be looking at 2018 rotation if the bull pen had not blown 21 saves? Seems as if we start thinking about every thing except how well the rotation performed over all. Give back just 10 of the blown saves and where would we be now? Is there any merit to this thought?

With 10 more wins we would have made the post season. But, think how poorly our starters were pitching (overall) late in the season. Think about how poorly we were hitting at the same time.
