I have heard Mendez or Juardo has a shot but nothing else is reasonably expected. Yes. I think we need to sign pitchers to minor league contracts.
It's the right thing to do but our development of them seriously needs to change.

Read one article a ways back stating the Rangers approach to developing pitchers is changing quite a bit

Working one pitch at a time and slower timetable to get to majors.

Re this season there is usually some long shot pitcher who does not catch on and will take MILB contract. That is one of my 10. The Mikolas guys as a potential pickup seems interesting. Of course we can all wish on Otani. We have as good as shot or better than most

I think the timetable they have used has been fine except for guys like Feliz and Ross who they brought up too early just to cover JD's bullpen mistakes.

The good news is that we should be going into spring next year saying "what did we do to fix our bullpen" instead of coddling their balls all offseason and having them fall flat on their faces. It's a weakness that has to be addressed and hopefully we do. I think that is our only real place to address in FA. We know we won't be big players for the top SP's. Yu's name will be bantered but I just know he's going to sign with Seattle or LAD. Otani will be fun to hope for, but don't see us paying the money he will take. So let's short up the BP with solid guys and then work on plate patience with our hitters. No chance Odor has another season like this one, and I hope Joey keeps working with his shrink and telling the hitting coach to STFU about closing his stance. beltre and Elvis will do their thing again, Choo will continue to be worth 1/4 what we are paying him, Deshields hopefully keeps progressing and keeps his weight down to keep his speed up. Little Willie I hope will integrate nicely into the clubhouse and be a regular contributor next year.

According to the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, Otani will have "keyhole'' surgery to address posterior impingement. The surgery is described as minimally invasive with less recovery time required than an open procedure.

Otani injured the ankle running the bases during the Japan Series last October. The condition caused him to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic in the spring and limited him throughout this season.

Otani hit .340 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 194 at-bats as the designated hitter. He was 2-2 with a 4.96 ERA in four starts. In 2016, a fully healthy Otani was 10-4 with a 1.86 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 140 innings.

"I want to be in perfect condition for the new season," Otani said in a statement issued by the Fighters. "I have decided to have surgery at this point in time now that the season is over. I will undergo rehab and training after surgery to be able to perform the way I can.''

Kind of what I've been saying only you said it better. There have been way to many problems that cost games not related to the rotation. EXAMPLE: bull pen, fail risp, ba/obp, ridiculos amt K's, and blown saves. Fix all those and determine what to do about the pitching. May find throwing dollars is not as necessary as thought to be. I agree we need help but at what cost.

With all the problems we currently have, The Darvishs' of the world won't fix them.

Otani can only be signed with international pool money you have available. As of September 17 the Rangers can offer the most at 3.5 million. Yankees are next at 3.2 million.

Otani, Darvish, and Mikolas would be a great offseason even if they did have to trade Hamels to afford who they picked up. If they also picked up a closer it would be a phenomenal offseason.

I would imagine they'd have to kick in some on Hamels salary, and I think I'd prefer just to hang onto him.

Outside of pitching, what about all our other problems? Not much being said for hitters with decent BA and OBP.
Certainly something needs to be done to improve these areas. Pitching is not the only aspect of the game we have to deal with. Fordman touched on this earlier today.

1/4....really?.....What would a player producing Choo's numbers demand in the open market today if he's 28?....Hell, what does any player get for producing what he does......I would dare to say if Choo were with the right team - perhaps the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox - then his value would be greatly enhanced due to circumstance.

Honestly think he's been harshly judged as a Ranger b/c the Rangers "organization" failed him....at least perhaps.

Fix all those and we're the greatest team in the history of the game. ha ha

I can admit I just don't like Choo. he will need an all star season to get back in my good graces. We signed him for a lot of money to be an on base guy and he can't do that. As far as who is around him? The OF's that bracket his OBP are Justin Upton and LAD Chris Taylor. Neither are good contract matches. Uptons is actually worse, and Taylor is still on rookie wage.

I wish we could trade him to one of those clubs if they think about him as highly as you do.

I don't see how we have failed him. We simply paid him too much and for too long because JD overvalued him for some reason.

Gallo and Mazara are going to have to mature and they should. Odor needs to be replaced by Profar, but that is not going to happen. We are going to have to wait until another middle infielder is ready before we jettison Odor and that might be 3 years down the road. Calhoun's bat should help when he has had some experience and the same might be said of Guzman. In other words the hitting is more than a one offseason correction. In fact, is might be a problem that takes 2-3 years to make marked improvements. That is especially true considering that Beltre will probably play less and hit less as time goes by.

So, what is the story about seeing Otani's name spelled two different ways?
