Howie Kendrick, (Dodgers) - No thanks
Daniel Murphy, (Mets) - No thanks

Fair enough. Like I said, I'm confident Parker/Mac would produce if given the opportunity. I also expect Pence to stay mostly healthy and Blanco to produce similar to his 2015. That's a fairly competent group, but shallow IMO. A big move could be warranted if it's the right fit, but I agree it's not necessary. I too am not sold on Cespedes, though he would be a flashy addition in the power department. I think Zobrist would be a better fit, perfect player for Bochy. Of course, the Giants may have already set their sights on Blanks.
I'd object to Zobrist too, only because a three year deal to any 37 year old player makes me nervous. Zobrist will command less money and he has been fairly consistent his whole career. I'd like him as a one year deal, maybe two, but nothing more. If Byrd comes back on a one year deal, I'd be okay. I'd even be okay with De Aza as the 4th or 5th guy. He's going to be hard pressed to find a starting job somewhere.

Maybe we need to talk more about the guys who didn't reject a DQ offer who are on the market still. Can we assemble a much better team with a couple from that list?

I agree re: Z. He will be too pursued to realistically get a good deal on him. Pass.

I think Byrd would be OK with a 1-year deal, and I think he wants to come back. He would add depth and we would not need 500+ PAs from him, so I think it is a perfect match. Assuming The Giants get a SP or two and they are basically dumpster diving for an OFer. If they strike out on SPing, than they NEED to get Heyward, Cespedes, Gordon, Upton, etc...

De Aza is much like Byrd, but a half-step behind. I would prefer Byrd.

In no particular order, here a few guys that caught my eye (not much thought past that at this point)...

OF
Austin Jackson (29)
Marlon Byrd (38)
Will Venable (33)
Gerardo Parra (29)
Domonic Brown (28)
Yoenis Cespedes (30)
Rajai Davis (35)
Alejandro De Aza (32)
David DeJesus (36)
Chris Denorfia (35)
Jonny Gomes (35)

SP

Henderson Alvarez (26)
Brandon Beachy (29)
Mark Buehrle (37)
Johnny Cueto (30)
Doug Fister (32)
Edwin Jackson (32)
Scott Kazmir (32)
Cliff Lee (37)
Kenta Maeda (28)
Cory Luebke (31)
Tim Lincecum (32)
Mike Leake (28)
Ryan Vogelsong (38)

This is really just a brainstorm list. More than half of these guys I would probably be upset about if we signed them...

I think I may actually prefer De Aza over Byrd. De Aza is 31 years old and has been fairly consistent in his numbers (OPS+ of 105, 97, 100 and 104 the past 4 seasons). Nothing great, but he would be cheap. Byrd has been trending downward (OPS+ of 138, 109 and 101 the past 3 seasons, 2012 was disastrous for him). Byrd is also 38, so I expect his numbers to continue downward. Neither seemed that great defensively.
For some reason, I think Byrd would be more likely to want or expect a starting spot while De Aza would be more willing to play back up. I also have the assumption that Byrd would want more money. If all these things are correct, I think De Aza would be the better choice.

Agreed. Byrd, Davis, DeJesus, Denorfia, Gomes, Buehrle, Lee and Vogelsong are too old in my mind to be worth anything more than minor league invitations. Additionally, Brown, Beachy, Jackson, Lincecum and Luebke would be intriguing minor league signings with an invitation to camp, but nothing more.

The most interesting outfielders are Jackson, Parra and De Aza. I've shared my thoughts on them before so if they are looking for more than 2 years/$20 million (1 year, $4 million for De Aza), I'd say pass (mainly because they don't represent an upgrade, or much of an upgrade, over Blanco, and he is a bargain at $3.75 million per season). As for pitchers, Alvarez would be an interesting pick up for a 1 or 2 year deal (allow him to get back on his feet on the West Coast). Ditto, Leake, Fister and Kazmir (he more because of injury history than recovery from a hard season). I don't know much about Maeda. Cespedes and Cueto will be too expensive for my taste

Time to go after realistic pitchers. Go get 2 solid starters that are around 27-28 years old with a sub 4 era.

The only free agent pitchers that fit your age range are Mat Latos and Mike Leake. Only Leake had a sub 4 ERA last year.

Leake is a must. Cueto is probably a Dodger, but I expect the Giants will look at him. Another SP is a must, could be Kazmir, Fister, Meada. Please god not Shark/Scrabble. Don't want to have to google how to spell his name every time I post. Also, he's overrated. The Giants will probably be linked to him a lot though.

Samardzija looks to be the next Barry Zito signing for whoever picks him up. $100 million possible for a guy who is going to be 31 in 2016 and has just one good season as a starting pitcher?

Like Cal has said, if it's a one-year show me deal, then sure. But I will be pissed if it's a deal like what's been rumored.

Yes, a 1 year get re-established deal works great. A multi-year, ludicrous amounts of money because you were once a star wide receiver at Notre Dame, a one time blue chip prospect and had one good season as a starter screams NO!

Interesting.

Could we take a flyer on Chacin or Pomeranz? Both are relatively young.
Chacin would be an interesting pick up. Pomeranz is simply listed because he was traded. You can filter out trades on the search options.

I haven't seen anyone mention Mark Buehrle's name as a possibility here. He allegedly retired, but he's "only" 36, 37 in March, and had a very decent year last year.

Now, he made $20mm in 2015, but is he worth an offer of 2/30, or 2/32? We could get him short-term, and he fits Teh Window.
