So the question I would ask is, does the team need a big money pitcher to make the playoffs? The Dodgers got brilliant offensive contributions in the first month of the season and a historic year from Zack Grienke. Can both happen in 2016? The Giants main problems in 2015, in my estimation, were injuries and lackluster starting pitcher. The latter, especially, has been written in depth already on this board, so I won't go into it. Would it require a big name guy (Price, Grienke, etc) to get the bump into the playoffs or would two mid tier pitchers (Chen and Leake, for example) get it done?

I'd rather have two mid-tier pitchers for the regular season, but one big name guy for the playoffs. Which is to say that either strategy has its merits.

If I were the GM, I'd go with the two mid-tier SP's. Spreads the risk and we need the depth. But I don't have access to all the information they have.

Another name we have not mentioned here in a while is Kenta Maeda. I know he is expected to be posted soon. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this kid, outside of the fact that he has put up ridiculous number over the last few years?

Yeah, who wants a guy who is 29 and puts up 120 ERA+ and 4.0 WAR. Guys like that grow on trees....

:noidea:

Last year he put up a 110 ERA+, 3.5 WAR, but it was a decline in all categories. ERA+ down, WAR down, WHIP up, H/9 up, HR/9 up, BB/9 up, SO/9 down. He lost his fastball. In 2014: .231 BA, .350 SLG, 85 wRC+. In 2015: .301 BA, .465 SLG, 124 wRC+. He wasn't throwing as hard, in 2014 he threw 159 pitches over 95 mph, in 2015 he threw 31. In 2014 he threw 928 pitches over 94 mph, in 2015 he threw 296. He's also at risk of a second Tommy John over the life if his contract. Most pitchers face a second surgery after a 5 year "grace period". Zimmermann had his surgery in 2009.

There are too many red flags with him that I would feel okay handing out a $22M AAV.

Looking for a Kenta Maeda Comp | FanGraphs Baseball

Not great velocity, but incredible movement. Slider like Sergio Romo, a chanegup like Felix Hernandez, and a cutter. Throws the kitchen sink at you.

There are questions about if he can hold up over a full season, but he probably projects out to a solid 3.

Red Sox just signed Chris Young. Rumors are that is so they could trade Jackie Bradley Jr. If they do he is a perfect fit for the Giants. He would look good in CF. So good defensively and so much speed. He would be worth trading Susac for.

Not that I want to be rid of Joe Panik but, to play devil's advocate here, Panik is a bit of a risk for any team that would want to take him on. A young middle infielder already dealing with back problems can spell trouble. It may not be anything more than a brief episode. It could also be a chronic issue that saps him of his offensive production and his defensive range. A team, such as the Braves, will be aware of the potential downside for him.

Four of the last six championship teams did make a mid-season trade. They are:

Royals (2015)- Johnny Cueto
Giants (2014) - Jake Peavy
Red Sox (2013) - Jake Peavy
Cardinals (2011) - Edwin Jackson

Cueto, Peavy (2014) and Jackson were on the last year of their contracts. Peavy (2013) had one year left on his deal.

Good for him.

Pisses me off that he is not part of our org, though. But he needs to get back in the game one way or the other.

Yeah. He's 6'0", and 154 lbs. Not a typo. 154lbs.

Already pitched over 1500 innings with Hiroshima. I have to question how much more can he can pitch before he breaks down.

My post was referring to Jordan Zimmermann, not Shelby Miller.

Definitely a huge concern. I'm not going to pretend like I know how good a facilities they have over there, but there is some hope that once he gets posted, signs and is exposed to our facilities, he can put on some weight. I don't know if he can be trusted for more than 150 innings/24 starts though and that may be generous.

Someone mentioned his name here I believe, and he would be a fantastic fit. We don't really match up well with Boston as trade partners though, they are looking for pitching and the Giants don't have anyone to send in return. Unless they have a weird Matt Cain fetish.

Just let him room with Sabbathia or Colon for a while, and we'll see how the weight issue goes.

And there's the $64,000 question that Bobby Evans has to answer. I certainly don't know, but I'm pretty sure Bobby is open to all three possibilities (trade, elite FA, mid range FAs).

Mariners to sign Nori Aoki

Mariners To Sign Nori Aoki

Another strong hint that the FO is looking to upgrade the OF.

If we can't achieve the dream scenario of Greinke/Miller/[premium OF], I would be OK with two solid pitching upgrades and resigning Marlon Byrd. Just keeping it real.

Am I just a Giants apologist?

I am already defending them not getting Greinke in my head. "We have Blackburn ready for a spot!" or "Leake is a MUCH better value" or "A trade is a better route to take anyway!"

Can someone pass the Kool-Aid? My glass is empty.
