I 100% agree that we will not sign even 2 QO FAs, let alone 3. My point was that it would take that level of reduction in the draft pick cost for me to be interested in Lackey.

I am hesitant to go after Zimm for the same reasons, though. He is a QO with an injury history coming off a down year. I would prefer Scrabble on a 1-year deal or Cueto.
I think he's going to be a Giant just so everyone on this board can refer to him as such throughout the season.

I was thinking Leake first after we get Miller.

Leake is clearly a top get. The only situation that I would be "OK" with us NOT getting him is if we were to get 2 of Greinke / Price / Cueto.

And I think I would still prefer Leake to Cueto.

I would consider Susac plus prospect(s), if you consider Susac ML-ready.

I might even consider Panik straight-up if it was felt we had a replacement ready, eg, Tomlinson. We might need for the Braves to add something.

The Sac would start for 10-15 clubs right now. He's ready. I really hope we don't trade him though.

I'm more than a little skittish about laying out the huge bucks it would take to get Price or Greinke, and even Cueto. We'll have to outbid some teams with some mighty deep pockets.

I suspect management will take the more balanced approach.

Bum/Leake/Miller/Peavy/(fight for #5)

If we do get two quality starters, we should seriously consider a 6-man rotation up until the ASB.

Not signing a premier pitcher leaves room to sign a quality OF. Jason Heyward at 10/200? See #2:

Agreed. Better I should have said if Atlanta considers him to be ML-ready, ie, the centerpiece from the SF side in a trade for Miller.

And, yeah, I'd rather keep him, too. His value to us will only increase as Posey plays less catcher and more...somewhere else.

As long as we don't call up Quiroz to be his battery-mate.

Budget may get to be an issue.

If we sign more than one player who has a QO, do we surrender more picks?

Yes. Each player who got a QO and signed with another team loses the signing team a draft pick.

This is exactly why he is my first choice, before Greinke.
Not to be a pessimist, but mentally we need to be prepared for the eventuality that we don't sign or trade for anyone of real impact. It may be a small percentage of the outcome matrix, but it exists nonetheless. Maybe it's hype, but I get the sense there are a lot of clubs competing for the same assets we are looking for. Anyone we do sign may be well down the list of the top 50 FA's.

J.A. Happ signed 3/$36M with Toronto, probably putting them out of the running for Price.

Down to Cubs/LA/Bos/SF most likely

Hope that contract works out for them. Just paid for a half season in Pittsburgh?

This moves Price way above Greinke for me. Still not convinced signing a huge deal with a pitcher is a wise decision.

I agree (if by "huge" you mean "6 years or more"). And I think it will take 6-8 years to sign Price, and probably 5-7 to sign Greinke.

Just say no.

Agreed. Plus, the only times we've landed highpriced free agents is in times of desperation rebuilding.

I would not expect us to land a top shelf pitcher anytime soon. If we could resign Leake, trade for Miller, and snag a decent OF, I would be ecstatic.
